Yeah, you only wanted the car fixed. Tell them to uncheck it. We had issues before when the fleet cars and van were serviced, the garage would charge for new wipers, washer fluid, stuff you could get in motor factors for 1/4 of the price. We refused to pay for these parts as we had told them to service the vehicles only and advise anything that needs replacing.

what make/model/year is your car????what was the nature of your breakdown???? your nct is out, How long???? to cover themselves legally (in the event of an accident) it would be good practice to ensure your car is safe before handing back to you. With a current up to date nct and it may not be an issue....60euro is small money for peace of mind....do you carry children in your car with out of date nct????
    all the best

The €50 for a real NCT test is even smaller!:D

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

What is it with carrying children?

Pre NCT checks are silly, and Irish people have an irrational fear/respect for the NCT. It is a simple check on the cars road worthiness, and by and large is meaningless... I'd sooner fill a Volvo s70 that failed the NCT over a blown lightbulb with babies (god forbid) than an aging Metro that just passed.

Does Bus crash, children dead, driver, owner, garage, doe centre, Court case to assertain blame on somebody ring any bells with you. To cover themselves legally( in the event of an accident) a (silly) pre NCT Check on any car overdue a meaningless NCT test before handing back to custumer can provide peace of mind for both owner and repairing garage.
A volvo s40 is a safer car than an aging metro...true agreed..but the law is the same regarding nct testing both have to pass.
make/model/year/ of OPs car and cause of breakdown, repair involved???
would give a clearer indication of OPs and the repairing garages postion.
    all the best

Pre-NCT's have no legal standing at all, if the garage was that concerned they could have put the car through the real NCT, charged a €10 fee and then thats the €60 well spent.
The DOE is a legal requirement , hence the courtcase you're alluding too.

Anyway, the main point here is that the garage carried out work which they had not cleared with the customer.

As others have said Pre NCT checks are a waste of money, send the car through the NCT and let them tell you want needs fixing. Most garages don't have NCT testing equippment as per the real thing so how can they do a pre NCT check or guarantee it will pass?

Also OP as you did not ask for or sanction a Pre NCT check or whatever they call it, you should not have to pay for it.

What ??? Fare enough on price but a garage shouldn't have to contact you about these servicing items.... All they should have to confirm with the customer is more expansive items like brake pads etc... !!!!

And for that chap being charged for Pre Nct Check that not on he didn't ask for it.Refund big Time !!!

Sounds like penny wise pound foolish to me.

Not really, Charging €2.50 + VAT for screen wash, when you can get a 5ltr for a couple of euro more. Same with wipers. We were always watching costs, even in the boom times. The Boss did not like to get ripped off. Anything major would be sorted with the garage, upon approval form us.

I agree that after agreeing the price of having a car serviced, any proposed additional costs should be communicated and either authorised or declined. I think thought that when you are advised to have items changed and decide to take ownership of this yourself, it can get messy. My approach to this has always been to include items like windscreen washer solution and wipers, in the original service price. I think wipers should be changed on a yearly basis automatically. There is no point I think in waiting for them to wear to change them, unless they are long life wipers. Same goes for replacing bulbs & focussing headlamps & emissions testing, all this should be included in a service price I think. I know it typically isn't, but I always included these type of things in a service.
