    What to do!!

So, myself and my partner have been on about traveling around the world for the past 2 or so years, have money saved etc but due to family circumstances we have not yet went! But do I go now? I have a full time job but like the rest of Ireland it can be snatched away from me at any given stage. Himself has a trade and is tipping away with his own work. Do we leave all this for the *possibility* of work abroad? Like in fairness, its either Oz or Canada and both aren’t exactly booming at the moment.

If we stay around we could be here looking back in 15 years with mortgage, rings and babies thinking we threw it away. If we do go and don’t get work we’ll be coming back to nothing…. Then again i can loose my job in the morning, do we wait for this to happen before heading?!

As you have probably guessed – we are the most indecisive people in the WORLD!!

Thanks for any advice, we just don’t know what’s best!

    **** the recession!
    **** the job losses!
**** the so called "keep your job in this climate" talk!

Go for it. If you both want to travel then do. I'm doing the same. Have an adventure, there'll be plenty of time for mortgage and jobs in the future regardless of what the whinging gits tell you about how you should take the safe option.

There are no jobs in Oz. Of 11 people I know who have gone one has got a job. They are starting to come home in dribs and drabs now. No idea about Canada.

to hell with jobs, they said they are going travelling - you can pick loads of backpacking work - just go and enjoy yourself

    The OP herself mentioned jobs.

OP, if you have the money then you can go any time you want. There is no rush either way, but if you both have jobs then why not wait and see how things pan out, save even more money and in 6 months to a year you'll know what the situation looks like here.

At the moment, unemployment is only going to rise, it doesn't make sense to put yourself on that list if you don't have to.

Asking for people's opinions is just going to confuse the issue. You'll have loads of people telling you that you should definitely go and you'll have loads of people telling you that you definitely should stay. It's something that you'll just have to decide yourself.

Personally, if I was you I'd wait till the end of the year and up until then I'd save like crazy which would make getting a job when you're away not such a big priority.

Ah thanks for the replies guys. I do reckon I have to sit down with a pen and paper and make a list - it just seems each option has plusses and minuses!

I know about 15 people who have come back from Oz in the past few months alone with no jobs, then again how many of these were willing to work hard is debatable also?!

I wonder is there a ''decision'' pill i can take to make this easier.

I think maybe give it another 6 months and hopefully we will be able to make a more informed decisoin...?!

I agree with Bazmo....spend few months checking where and what type of work if available. Canada is suppose to be ok for jobs and dubai aswell. Oz will depend on what kinda work you wanna do or are qualified to do.

TBH if you've the money to go then don't worry bout work coz once your not fussy you'll pick up bits along the way and you can always come home if your broke. Its more about the experience and fun along the way.

You'll probably be gone a year anyway and hopefully the country will be in better state when you come back. Wouldn't it be nicer to be broke in sunny weather than in cold rainy ireland :D

Not so sure about Dubai, doesn't seem to be the dream ticket it once was.

That's the most important thing to remember imo. If you're not going away to save all your earnings, and by the sounds of it you're not, I wouldn't be too about the type of work I'd be getting. You'll pick up bits and pieces.

Dubai is a terrible idea. Stay well away from the place if you are looking for work, my brother has been their over a year now and he says thing are really going down the toilet fast.

If you fancy teaching English, then their are plenty of jobs in Asia :D

OP, myself and my boyfriend were in your situation a few months ago. We were both in secure jobs in Ireland with good money yet we wanted to go travelling and knew if we left it much longer our money would be going towards a mortgage, wedding etc.

So we decided to go for it!We're in Korea teaching English. We earn good money and after our year contract is up we're gonna spend everything we've saved on travelling around asia and australia.

It was a brilliant decision - we're away from the doom and gloom. There's a recession here too but it doesn't affect us and we don't speak the language so we don't hear much about it!

The obvious downside is that we don't know if we'll be able to get jobs when we return but we're only young once. Unemployment may continue to rise over the next few years so you'll have to ask yourself will there ever be a perfect time for you to go??
