didn't get paid for hours worked

    Last month i was offered a new job and worked 4 hours on the first day. Then another job came up, and gave in notice. I never got paid for these 4 hours. I know its petty, but what can i do about this?

    As you only stayed there for 4 hours, I don't think you should expect to get paid at all.

    You deserve nothing as what you asking is not only petty...its taking the piss! Think of the employers time you wasted, dont think you would get the money and quite rightly so.

    Maybe the posters above might be willing to work for free but you shouldnt.As for wasting the employers time I presume the OP actually worked and wasnt on to the phone to the boss asking him what to do for those 4 hours.

    Also the OP didnt mention that they left early or anything...

    but then again it is only 4 hours:D

    I'm surprised by the responses here! Of course you should be paid for the work you did, regardless of your reason for leaving. They are depending on you feeling bad for quitting and hoping you won't ask.

    Were you on the payroll at the time? Did the Payroll people have your details? How can they pay you if they didn't?

    It's only going to be, what?, 40 euro or there abouts! Just forget about it!

    I don't understand this attitude! Are you in the habit of throwing away €40 that you are entitled to? Why should the OP?

    Assuming the OP signed a contract, would you advise the employer to sue the OP for breach of contract?

    If i was the employer I don't think I'd give you the money, they're going to have to advertise for a new job right after hiring someone who left on the first day.

    Have to agree with ARRGGGHHH as we all know there is a lot of training etc to be done on anybodies first day which means other employees time could have been wasted looking after the OP. See it from both sides of the argument.

    We don't know if a contract was signed or not. We don't know if it was a wage or salary, or any of the other conditions.

    I was only responding to someone who said that the OP shouldn't go after wages that we assume he or she is entitled to.

    Would you say the same thing if the OP left the job because they broke their leg and couldn't work any further? If they won the lotto and decided to quit working completely?

    If you work, you are entitled to be paid for it. At present that is all we know, unless the OP would like to come back and offer more details.

    Ì'm all for workers rights but the same type of person that thinks he should get paid is the same type of person that sees nothing wrong in accepting a job and walking out after four hours.

    You should NOT get paid for wasting people's time.

    ...and should also expect to get brought to court for breach of contract, assuming her contract says she needs to give one months notice.

    Not every battle has to be screw the employer. Sometimes it makes sense to be reasonable.

    its more likely that they dont want to waste another employee paid time
    taking care of payment to someone who walked out after 4 hours on the job.

    I gave adequate notice, was offerred job, was to start a week later, just brought in for a half day to get used to things, but spent four hours up to my elbows washing pots and pans. didn't take job, as the job description given to me was different to the job i'd actually be doing. employers think they can mess people around as jobs are scarce at the moment.

    I don't think i wasted their time, wasn't being trained or anything. they had a pot washer for four hours!!! that is not what i was hired for. :(

    you're entitled to be paid for the hours you worked.

    follow it up with the rights commissioner.

    Opinion: I would not pay you for wasteing my time

    Law: Good luck on that one employment rights would laugh at you for wasteing their time

    If you started the job you have taken the job :). And it's totally normal to not do everything on the job spec on your first day or week.

    Can you post the job spec here?

    Btw, the statutory minimum notice in Ireland is one week. You didn't comply with this.
