Foreign Affairs Minister Micheál Martin is in Cuba today on the first official visit to the country by an Irish Government minister.

Mr Martin says he wants to bolster relations between Ireland and Cuba and will discuss possible areas of economic co-operation.

He says Cuba's relations with the EU have entered a new phase and he will be discussing a number of issues with the country's officials, including human rights.

The minister is also due to visit the world-renowned Genetic Engineering and Biotech Institute in Havana.

Good point, and him being a former minister for mayhem in Healthcare. The system is world class in Cuba.

Indeed, traveling to one of the most closed off countries in the world, right on the cusp of the political changes that are ongoing over there, in the hope to set up some decent economic relations that our country sorely needs...how ****ing dare he!

LoL, of course i am! I mean, i didn't respond with the normal level of hate and vitriol.

Since you asked, nope, i am most definitely not a FFailer. Cuba will be one of those countries in a position to make enough positive change to really ride out any global economic disasters...because they have a lot of room to move.

Why shouldn't we keep them on the friendly side of the fence?

Or do we all expect our various Ministers and Heads of State to completely hole up in Ireland while the rest of the world continues it's dialogue and we get left out?

As I pointed out on the politics forum, they've only gone to Cuba because they heard about a big Fidel going on there.
