    Hi,

not sure if this is the right forum?

But in any case. I am in the process of setting up a company and want to register the name. After a brief internet search I found the CRO website. And a few other sites that let you register the company.

The company name seems to be not in use according to CRO, but after I looked at http://www.dnb.co.uk/ it seems there is already a company with the name.

How come D&B have it listed and the CRO doesn't?

Anybody have any ideas, or other good websites for registering or checking company names?

    Thanks,
    Bub

The CRO is only concerned with Ireland. You can have 20 sole traders or partnerships with the same name it doesnt matter, its limited compaies that is the issue. which are you setting up?

Why would you be concerned about any other country? Are you going to be setting up branch offices? If this is the case you may have to use a different name if its taken abroad.

It was a limited company, But on the d&b website you can pick which country to search. I selected Ireland and it gave me more names that are registered compared to the CRO website. Seemed odd, maybe it's a scam website that just gives you search results so you will pay for a company report.?

The CRO is the only source that can really be trusted.

Does the CRO website put all companies registered in Ireland on their website or would I get a bigger list if I call/write to them?

CRO is a live database and therefore is updated numerous times on a daily basis. Its the most accurate out there. D&B and similar companies, buy their databases from CRO. Its only if you know how to use the search facility correctly, that you'll get accurate results.

BTW, Just because its not listed on CRO, doesn't automatically mean its available. If you need help checking the availability, you can PM me as i use CRO on a daily basis.

    Thanks for the offer.

But if companies like D&B buy their databases from the CRO, I find it odd that there are more companies listed in Ireland on the D&B website compared to the CRO.

And thats why i'm wondering at the legitemcy of D&B? Can you trust the company at all? I did a google search on them, and I get nothing but good reports..

D&B are a good company for credit reports and the like and are a very reputable company as well.

The reason you get more results on the D&B website (in my opinion) is because is throws all search results into one screen. On the CRO website www.cro.ie/search, if you insert the name you are looking for and click the button "both" just above it, i'm pretty sure you'd get the same results D&B gave you. CRO just try to filter results by (1) Company Names (2) Business Names (3) Both

    Hope this helps
