National Government.

Why wouldn't a national government system work?

Its pretty obvious that no single party has the right ideas, or abilities, to properly run the country. Everyone seems to have a certain amount of candidates that you look at and think, wouldn't it be better if so and so was in charge of such and such a thing!. So why not?

Why can't the government be run by the most able persons, and not the people who are better equipped to discredit the opposition?

In this time when our country is on its knees and in dire need of proper leadership, why can't we pick the individuals that are best suited, not just who seems to be alligned with a particular political allegiance?

That might be over simplistic but in my honest opinion I think it is the best way to get our country back on track. I firmly believe that we have very little power in getting our country out of this recession, because global event affect on such a large scale that we have very little say about what goes on. A t the moment though we are making things worse because anything that is done has two political parties firmly in opposition, most of the time without offering a viable solution.

Is a National Government the answer?

No. Cowan & co got elected, and the next lot who are elected may do a better job. The "able bodied people" you speak of would run the government. If one was a sly little f**k, anyone saying the wrong thing may be sent to the Gulag prison camp... any they wouldn't be able to be voted off.

We need people to treat politics as consumers- someone is doing a crap job- fire them and vote for seomeone else- voting for someone becasue "Daddy" did is stupid.

You wouldn't buy a walkman becasue "daddy" did- you're getting yourself a shiney new i-pod.

The current crop are curropt fat-cats. Vote the thin hungry guys in- they do a crap job- vote for someone else till someone gets it right- all I know is that they would make more of an effort if their heads were on the chopping block in local and national elections.

It wouldn't work because essentially for a government to work they all have to be pulling in the same general direction. No point one minister in one department making decisions that cancel out what someone else is doing in another.

Also a lot of the people from opposing parties may not like each other and it would descend into bickering.

Also the "best" people tend not to go into politics. They go into science, engineering, business etc. Very few of the best people are in politics especially in this country.

Personally I think every government has a sell by date. Usually around 10 yrs. Maybe 15 for the best of them. I don't think this government was the best of them it was well past it's sell by date by the last election - by the Irish people thought otherwise.

You can't use the word "retarded" to describe monkeys, or anything else for that matter anymore, it's not allowed.

You have to call them by thir proper name, "Fianna Fail".

It would just be a shuffle of the same politicians spewing the same spiel to get elected.

We should sack more than half of them and actually make the rest of them earn their keep on a normal wage. Then, people would actually want to become a politician because they believed they could change the system, and not for the feckin' expenses account!

But retard just rolls off the tongue where as Fianna fail just leaves the taste of vomit in my mouth.

"It's okay I'm from the Government. I'm here to help."

There are at least 4 times too many politicians in the Dáil as it is.

Question: How many politicians does it take to screw the Irish economy?

Seems that democracy just isn't quite working the way it was intended to work. In order to get elected and represent your peoples interests you have to rise through the ranks and in order to do that you have to kiss the arse of vested interests and lobbyists and gather support from same and basically corrupt yourself and give up your fancy idealist fantasies. If you don't you will never get in a position to be elected and if you do there's just no way you're representing the interests of your people anymore. So by the time you reach positions of power you have become one of these gob****es whos's in cohoots with the establishment and 'the system' and you realize what you can do is very limited so you basically just look after yourself.

So the question is whether the establishment is just very very clever and managed to build a new feudal system under the disguise of democracy or whether they didn't need to do that at all since the greedy human nature will naturally revert to such a thing anyway?

This problem is very, very old and very well known - the old greeks knew about this - but it just won't go away. And we - the plebs - we're re only fooling ourselves that it will have to get better over time....

Take a step back from irish politics and ask yourself, who would make the ideal government if they were all in the same party. You'd be struggling, unfortunately.

Exactly my point, you might get one half decent cabinet from the whole Dáil. Unfortunately fcuk all of them would come from FF so we're doubley screwed at the moment.

Or we could ask Mr. Chavez to give us some oil money to kick-start our own socialist paradise.

No it's not - it's pretty obvious that FF don't. Labour and FG have both put out comprehensive plans for how to kickstart the economy. FF and the Greens have given us - what? A series of awkward and badly-thought-out ideas, put out there by possibly the worst Cabinet front bench I've ever seen in my life (seriously, Coughlan?).

A national government would neuter the opposition. Screw that. Government should be accountable to its people so let FF and the Greens work through this or at least have the grace to call an election some time this year.

Have they? I can't stand the sound of Endas voice so it's hard to pick up any of FG policy's. All I ever hear from them is how bad FF is.

Yeah that's FG's big weakness (well, apart from clinging to right-wing economic and social policies long after they were popular, aligning themselves to David Cameron and the Conservatives, and having a terminally uncharismatic leader). They attack FF too much, without explaining what they'd do differently.

Labour have struck a good balance with this by focusing more on what they'd do differently, rather than just how crap Cowen et al are.

We should have term limits on TDs. Give them 20 years and get fresh blood in after that.
