So I have the mixed pleasure of going to Hawaii for two weeks for work in March. Luckily, only one week is work, the other is holiday, of sorts.

So, anyone been cycling in Hawaii before? I'll be in Honolulu. I see Lance went there, must be somewhere to cycle ! MTB and/or Road.

Sounds good! You could try the Ironman bike course although it maybe looks a bit flat and might be on a bit of a main road. On the other hand volcanoes usually mean hills inland and if Lance went there it must all be good.

If I cycle into a volcano, I'll be unhappy Blorg.

Never fear Dirk, I shall be catching some knarly tubulars

Unfortunately I've never cycled in Kerry, my lazy chums fault

Wow. I'll have to try and rent a bike with a compact for that one. Must look for ferries over from Oahu. Good find, I'll make sure to get to the top with a boards.ie jersey.

I've driven up to the summit a few times - it's freaky driving through the cloud with brutal visibility (and it is quite cold). Once above the cloud it heats up again and visibility is excellent.

I don't believe the comment on the web page about steepest paved road being on the route - I've lived in San Francisco and there are streets there that no one would cycle up.

There are tours where people are driven up the road to see sunrise and then allowed to freewheel down.

If you want to experience Hawaii proper, get out of Honolulu as soon as your work is finished and head up to the north coast of Oahu. I was staying in a place called Waimea, or maybe it was Halei'wa, they're both kind of the same place anyway. Its much nicer and unspoilt, Honolulu is awful. I rented a bike (clunky old MTB, but it was ok) a couple of days up on the north coast, its really pleasant and there's loads of small beaches along the way where you can get off and jump into the water to cool off your hot undercarriage. There's no waves at Waikiki beach in Honolulu anymore anyway because when they built the hotels right at the waterfront, they messed up the winds that caused the waves. Up on the north shore is where all the real surfers go (I had no interest, but it was much nicer than Honolulu just for swimming and a relaxed holiday).
