Dealer Discounts on a Golf

Im looking on getting a 08 VW Golf 1.4 GT SP, looking at one or two on carzone and they are priced around the €20,000 mark! I would be looking for 0% finance from the dealer which requires a 50% deposit and the remainder paid over 2 years!

What im looking to know is, in your opinion, what discount should I be looking for off the sticker price? Id say easily 10% or do you think I should be looking for a bit more discount!

    I'd say €17000-17500, that is if it's an 80bhp.

Yeah Maybe if I say €16,000 and we have a deal, he might make me a counter offer, and settle for €17,000 or so! would be happy enough with that! Could go up the North but would prefer to buy in the south as long as I get a good deal!

    Yes it is the 80BHP!

Have a look on carzone.ie. Just had a look myself. There seem to be a few retailing around €17k, could get them down to €16500.

80 brake in a car that size

I know its not all about speed, but that thing wouldn't pull you out of bed! any kind of overtaking would be a nightmare, even dangerous.

You can do way better for that kinda money.

I dont want anything too fast
    • Not to long driving, need to keep the insurance down
    • The Golf holds its value very well and is a very nice car
    • the 0% finance is also another factor

Its a nice car alright, no doubt about that.Wouldn't you be better off building up a few years no claims and then get a new car with a good engine to boot?

I know its not what you want to hear, we all have to do it ( still doing it too in my case )

I dont know whats the story with the 1.4 TFSI insurance wise, but that would be a dream drive.

If resale value is your main reason for buying a Golf then prepare to be shocked. In the current used car market nothing is impervious to heavy depreciation at present including the Golf. Dealers still have plently of unsold 08 pre reg Golfs with little or no mileage on them sitting on their forecourts they are trying to shift. Remember that it is also the old model meaning resale values will drop even more as it gets older.

The above one is asking €17k, it cost €22k to €23k about a year ago,
that's around €6k depreciation in 12 months, this is now normal and proves the Golf is no longer different to any other car in it's class.

But I don't think you don't understand that Golf 1.4 is dangerously slow. I can assure you that when overtaking you'll be taking your life into your own hands.

It also won't be that economical. That engine would have to work serious overtime to move a car that weight around and therefore consume more fuel.

I agree, this is a much better buy.

I don't think you are considering the OP's requirments of keeping insurance down.

That engine has apparently been cancelled as it was unreliable also.

Have you looked at the Peugeot 308. 1.4, 95 bhp, 155 g/km. Brand new ones now being advertised for 16.8k. And unlike the Mk5 Golf, it isn't an obsolete model.

If you don't like the 308, there are big discounts on other new cars too. However if you buy a new or nearly new car now, be prepared to be stuck with it and to write off most/all of the value of the car.

There is a new 2009 model Golf 2.0TDI on Carzone for about the €21k mark at the moment that is taxed for the year:

Not sure about how that would effect the OPs insurance but certainly low running costs

Jaysus... Seems cheap... Is it the 110 bhp?

Edit: Don't mind me, i'm stupid. I'm fairly sure Trendline stands for basic as basic can be as well.

Yup, the clue is in the ad title! :)

This would be a much better buy for the OP, and could be gotten for about 20k i'd imagine. I have a Mk4 1.4 Golf and as much as I like it (for a first car it did the job), it is painfully underpowered. Looking forward to getting something more powerful in the future.

I've a Mk4 as well and it's not as painfully underpowered as everyone makes out. Perfect for a 1.4

All Golf petrols aren't the best, insurance on that 1.4 wouldn't be that bad probably cheaper than that diesel anyway. The Japs had those petrol powered engines years ago and they proved incredibly reliable.I wouldn't touch a petrol Golf myself unless I was getting it for nothing, so your probably right to best avoid.Diesel's are another story, insurance will be a bit more, but who cares when your spending near 20k.

Go for that diesel Golf OP, brillant deal.

Not all the petrol engines are bad in fairness. Plus, there's plenty of people have had trouble with the PD 2.0 TDI too

Actually the insurance difference between a 1.9 Tdi and 1.4 petrol is minimal. Well was anyway.

Its power to weight ratio is lower than a 1.0l 92 Micra :o

Your right about the insurance, no difference on 123.ie if you have a full licence.

I've driven the 1.4 Golf quite a bit lately. I think it's a nice relaxing car to drive.

It won't win any races but it's perfectly capable of being driven normally without having to work the engine hard.

Fuel consumption is perfectly fine around the city and out on the motorway at 100kph.

Personally I drive a diesel Volkswagen. Its about 60 extra insurance on the 1.9 diesel than the 1.4 petrol. Tax is is a lot more on the diesel(im on old rates). Fuel consumption is similar +-10mpg. Obviously diesel is a bit better. Diesel is noisey but a lot of fun to drive, then again depends on the power output from the engine.

Ok first of all thank you for the replies, really helpful, although you might have changed my mind, which seemed made up!

My choice was not based on resale value at all, will be a car that I intend on keeping for a few years at least

See there is a 07 1.6l automatic with cruise control and alot of extras for a little less money! just wondering would this be a better buy? the reduction in price might offset the difference in insurance!

Would an automatic be a help or hinderence to a driver not long on the road?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 495 ✭✭Tony Broke

Do you have a full licence and do you do alot of city/driving in traffic?

If you do I dont see any reason why an auto would be a bad choice, besides resale value. Its a 6 speed box with decent power in every gear and fuel consumption is good.

I'm not 100% but if its the 1.6 8v engine its a 4-speed auto. I have that engine in my car and its pretty reliable. Not a rocket ship by any means but peppy enough. Dunno how the auto would blunt performance mind. Also there would be a penalty in terms of fuel consumption. Mine is pretty poor around town so couple that with an auto and it could be expensive to run. Also road tax is high on one of those if on emissions based system.

Waiting to do my test in 3 weeks, hopefully should pass it! Wouldnt do too much city driving, more of around the town, not too much traffic, well compared to Dublin, eventually could be doing a bit of motorway and city driving! Just wondering that a automatic might make me uselsess in a manual after getting use to an automatic so early in my driving life!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,822 ✭✭✭✭EPM

You'd probably re-adjust in a few days. I'd love one for city driving but prefer the control of a manual. For the money you're thinking of spending, you could bring in a 2008 1.9tdi Golf Match (very good spec) with a DSG gearbox from the UK. This is an automatic but a very good one. It has two clutches, one for odd gears and one for even gears, so that the gear changes would be quick. Come time to sell one it would be a lot more attractive than a 1.6 petrol auto. Just an idea thats all. You could equally get a manual version of that car.

Something like this - but they can be got cheaper. cargiant.co.uk or autoquake.com have them regularly but just not at the moment
