If you're using any sort of a telecoms network, your usage is tracked. Any sort of a mobile network, your location is also tracked. Always.

Most phones only really turning it off or unplugging battery.

With a Mobile Modem it just has to be powered on and enabled. You don't have to actually transfer data.

The Masts send little "who's there" broadcasts and the phones & Modems go "Me!".

It's so when you are called or sent an SMS the system knows which mast to send it to.

If they REALLY need to find you they can go to a diagnostic mode and triangulate.

Who are you worried about being able to trace you OP? Most things can be tracked when they end up going through the courts etc and very little things these days are untraceable. It really depends on who you want to hide yourself for / or want to check who has access to info.

Every time you use a cash card, store loyalty card, credit card your location could be traced remotely in real time.

The M50 reads your number plate via a camera. There are camera all over the country. Any could be updated to know you passed in real time.

Every time you use a Tag for a car park or toll someone knows *YOU* are there.

This is all Twentieth century tech. The phone or Modem is the least worrying bit.

not worried about being traced, just would like to be able to leave less of a trail and less info about myself in general. i dont like the fact that store cards for example use your shopping habits to push more products at you. privacy is a right. for example would you like it if the government forced you to register your mobile ph. there is nothing necessarily wrong with it but it does infringe on your rights
