May i suggest you try x5 world, and look through there nav section. It will provide all detailed questions and instalation instructions. The pricing really depends on what one you get, but needless to say only a MKIII or Mk IV are worth getting, It will cost you a considerable amount of cash and time to install, but will probably be worth it. The x5 server is down at the moment but it will be back up shortly http://www.x5world.com/

It will cost about €1500 for the parts you need. Its not cheap, but the factory stuff looks infinately better than a cheapo unit stuck on your windscreen.

    Install takes about 4 hours.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 290 ✭✭666bxg

Parts can be obtained cheaply these days - thats not the main issue.....

Installation on the other hand is a major pain in the @rse. You almost have to strip the whole interior of the car - seats, carpets etc to wire the unit from the dash to the boot, where the computer sits!

Its not impossible, but definitely time consuming and requires moderate skills and a lot of patience.

Let me know if you still need help in the right direction.......

    Good luck

This is discussed over an over on the 7 series forum of bimmerboard, and almost everyone recommends NOT to do it, as it will cost you an absolute fortune and waste countless hours installing a system that is 6-7 years old.

Although I completely agree that you can't beat the factory look, think of what you could buy for €1500 less the price of a Garmin.
It might even be worth your while to sell your car and get a lower mileage, higher spec for the amount its going to cost you. Time is money too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,570 ✭✭✭rebel.ranter

I looked into this and I have a PDF of the "how to". It lists all the parts need & I think I worked it out to be close on €1,800 if you want the TV function too. The big components are one part of the puzzle but it is wiring looms & other parts can add up too.

BTW I believe the 3 Series system is different to the 5/x5 system.

Oh, if you do get it installed & working it will still be a crap Sat Nav compared to a €150 Garmin!

If yours is an auto 3 Series can I suggest two alternative projects?

    1. SMG Paddle Shift Steering Wheel
    2. iPod integration kit (Dice) for OEM stereo

I have done both & can recommend them. (pics can be added)

get a double DIN bracket and put a kenwood dnx-5220BT in there, bluetooth car kit + garmin sat nav + optional tv tuner, easier install, way cheaper, and a fantastic stereo

I think this is the unit you're thinking of:

    http://www.europeanautosource.com/product_info.php?cPath=67_69_73&products_id=616

Very expensive- not worth it imo. You will have to move the air con controls down, which could be tricky. And, as others have said, the Sat Nav will be quite outdated now, probably not as good as a cheap Garmin Sat Nav.

Did you install the Dice Silverline Ipod Kit for the 3-series?

If so, how do you find it?

(I'm thinking of installing one myself).

You have to move the air con controls down to the next space- the sunglasses holder. It would be easy enough to do, but I clearly remember reading before that it can mess up the air con- with some of the air flow being interrupted, etc. Maybe I'm mistaken, but I wouldn't like to be left with the air con not working.

There is an adaptor kit available for it and afaik BMW actually do one for it!

There is an adapter fascia available for the E46 which will let you fit a double din Sat Nav unit to it!

    See all about it here

Yeah you're mistaken alright - the aircon console clips out and clips back in. No air comes anywhere near it - the vents look after that. I did the full satnav install before - and have had the dash apart in plenty of E46's. Its a very simple install despite what others (who have never done it) say!

One good thing about the OEM install is that you can option it up with something like the intravee ipod interface - which is by far and away the best one you can get, TV, reversing camera etc.

 Er? I'm not the OP. The OP (gazman59) asked if the satnav retrofit is expensive, and imo yes it is.

There is a temperature guage located inside the air con panel, and I thought that there may be a lot of wiring behind the air con unit. I actually thought about doing this install before with an intravee ipod interface, and I remember reading something that put me off. However, if you've done it successfully, then I'll take your word for it. Thanks for clearing that up. I agree with you that the oem install option definitely looks the best.

Do you mind me asking how much this would cost in total (including the intravee ipod connection), because I would be interested in it now seeing as the air con wouldn't be a problem.

Does youres have the full electronic controlled air con or the manual one?

Im sure this would have a big impact on moving the controls because of rods, cables etc......

Heres the guide I did after installing mine - http://www.bmw-driver.net/satnav_1.asp

Prices vary - depends on whether you want the CD or DVD based Nav. You do need the BM54 tuner regardless - the older tuner isn't compatible with the retrofit harness.

    Rough prices

    Screen - €150 for 4:3, €400 for 16:9
    BM54 Tuner - €300 or so
    Retrofit cable - €150
    MkIII Computer - €200, MkIV - €400
Extras (new fascia, GPS antenna etc) - €100 or so
TV Tuner if you want it will be another €300 or so

Intravee is then about €300, and the Alpine interface needed is another €50 or so.

Its far from a cheap option, but if you're holding onto the car for a while its worth it - makes a nice difference to the interior apart from anything

Thanks for the info. It adds up to about 2k then; that's quite a lot tbh. Would it be possible to get a basic (16:9) screen + intravee Ipod connection for about €1k
(I'm not interested in either the TV or the Sat Nav, as I'm more interested in getting a good quality Ipod connection which will display the tracks. The Sat Nav will be quite poor/basic anyway.)

What is the Mark IV Computer needed for?

    cheers,

OP i think a 3rd party stereo is your best option, I have the kenwood in my car and the ipod interface is fantastic. full control and excellent sound quality,

there is a facia adapter for both E39 and E46, heres what it looks like with the kenwood :

As neat as that is, and by far the best solution pricewise, I still don't think it looks right...

It adds up to €900 or so for one option (MKIII unit and 4:3 screen) and around €1400 for the other (MkIV and 16:9 screen). You can get very lucky on eBay though and pick up stuff cheaper.

The MkIV is the DVD based unit, the MkIII is the CD unit - you need either of them, the CD unit isn't as quick as the DVD one though, and is alot cheaper as a result.

You need either the Sat Nav pc (MkIII or MkIV) or the TV tuner for the screen to work - the sat nav pc is effectively the 'brain' of the unit, the TV tuner takes control if the sat nav pc falls over. So you can't just fit a screen and intravee unfortunately! Fitting teh TV tuner also involves removing teh rear bumper to fit the diversity antennae, so its a bit of a pain.

Personally I find the OEM sat nav absolutely perfect for me - I generally know where I'm going, but when I have to venture onto the Southside its invaluable! I've coded mine to have the Garda enforcement zones on it which is quite handy as well as a few other bits.

Its supposed to be good - very highly rated in the states. Its a better option than the intravee if you don't have the sat nav.

I put one in mine about 3 months ago, FANTASTIC bit of kit, cost me $149 (but got stung for €55 import duty:()

I'm completely sh!te with anything mechanical but was able to fit is perfectly in about 45 minutes into boot (I disconnected my cd changer and the cable from that went into the Silverline). All the bits fit perfectly into the little cubby hole under where your cd changer is located, its totally invisable when you open the boot.

Ipod charges constantly, I have not even taken it out of the boot since I installed it, I can select anything I want via the steering wheel controls, By Album, Artist or Playlist.

    Can't recommend it highly enough.

Have you set it up with *.wav files at the start of the playlists so they get "read out" when you are browsing. A site like this one will work for creating your wav files:

Hi all, i was wondering if youd be kind enough in telling me how i can achieve the above.
How would i get the Heating panel where it is in that picture like would you need a new panel or will the current one just fit in... what needs to be done and how?

I really want to do something like that.

    Would really appreciate your help!

    Cheers

Yes, you can change the air con controls to the sunglasses holder- ie. moving it down to the next space.

Check post #18 above- kdevitt linked a guide on how to install the oem BMW sat nav/TV screen. An aftermarket install would be somewhat similar in terms of removing trim and air con, etc.

Bear in mind though that the aftermarket unit in the picture above will still cost a fair bit, and imo just doesn't look right in this particular car. Your decision though.

What car have you got. E46?
