If those lawyers don't give back the money no government organization should ever be allowed to use them again.

in any job i've worked in, if you got overpaid, you gave it back..

probably the worst people to overpay are solicitors, they'll jus get around it wit some legality

Does anyone actually give a shit about these tribunals?
What is the point of them? Seriously, the country are spending millions on these and for what? The only people who want to keep these things going are those fuckers who are making 2,500 a day. It's just stupid.

Mr Buckley estimated the final cost for the Mahon, Moriarty and Morris Tribunals could reach €434m, but the Government appears to believe the final bill will be higher.
Well, that's a couple of schools and nursing homes right there, into solicitors pockets.

These guys were barristers and not solicitors. Solicitors AFAIK don't make anything near €2,500 a day, nor do most barristers for that matter. I think I heard somewhere that a partner in one of the top 5 Irish solicitor firms makes about €500,000 per year, a fair amount no doubt but not exactly as insane as the senior counsel in this case.

Yes, it is definately feasible for a Senior to be making €2000 a day in a case, not necessarily one to do with a tribunal. Hourly rate for partners in big firms could be about €400-500 per hour for a consultation.

Why should they give it back or be forced to give it back?

They agreed on a price for services and everything was fine and dandy for 6 years!

You can't just turn around an say oh I meant to pay you less!

They should give back the 2000 euros a day they were over payed.
    250 a day is enough for them.:P
Considering after all that cost, no one was prosecuted.
Perhaps the Fraud Squad and CAB should have been used instead. Much better value and far better results.

We can't really blame the banks for this one, or the global credit crunch.

Who is to blame here ? The person who made the typo, or the people who benefited from the typo and kept their mouths shut ?

You'd want some neck on you to keep quiet about that money for so long ... how is that different from stealing ?

Well the thing is the state is a very good customer, a mistake was made and if they value the states custom they should give back the money as they probably knew they where being paid to much.

The state should fight to get value for money when it comes to these kind of senseless wastes of money.
