Recently, a friend of mine altered some files in a password protected user file on the same server(Fedora). I'd like to exact some revenge!

If I go to /his_username/, it won't let me use the ls command. I do know the name of a sub directory, though (/his_username/directory1/). Is there a commant I can type while at the latter address to view the names of sister directories, or even a way to do something while at the first address.

    I have no root access.

I'll say no. I'd imaging your friend has tightened permissions on his home directory to prevent such actions :pac:

You could always use a Live CD, like sysrescue, but I guess that would be cheating...

The server is remote, so a live CD wouldn't work. Would it?

Meh. I'll just boot his ubuntu into recovery mode and change his passwords...

You could boot it into single user mode. Are you administrator? You could just do 'sudo chmod -R 777 /home/his_name'.
