Can anyone give a realistic review of the Chevrolet Kalos car? Thinking of buying a secondhand one from private seller but don't know anything about them. Would they be a good buy or would it be better to go through a dealer. Cash tight so don't need car without guarantee!!

    Tell us more kildimo.

    Price, year, pics if possible.

If you are buying from a dealer and Im going to assume for a moment your in Kildimo, Co Limerick then your dealer is Ennis road motors who are a good bunch.

Personally I dont like or rate the Kalos. I would want to be starting somewhere around the Lacetti mark.

Chevrolet are a rough ride, the engine is ok and parts are cheap.

It's a 2006 model, 5 door, approx 20k miles and asking for about 5K. Private seller.

I would say you could do much better than that on the price. Most dealers would be around €5500 for this car with warranty.

Maybe offer €4,200 for the car and finish at €4.500.

Possibly take another €150 for a service and plugs & filters.

You will be doing the seller a favour buying the car because nothing is shifting now. Buyers market.

You can try but he might not want it.

What is it? Is it actually worth anything?

Here is one for similar money from a dealer but you will get a warranty with it if your worried about buying private. They will most likely also take your old car as part exchange:

Regarding the car itself, just a rebadged Daewoo, basic a to b transport.

you're talking a 3 star NCAP safety rating, even a Yaris or Punto from 10 years ago had a 4 star rating.

    Something to consider.

Thanks guys, this is very helpful. My daughter is going to have a look at it today and see if its better / more comfortable than my '97 Fiesta. Finding that hard to get out of at the moment!! And I think it's about time I upgraded, but cash poor, like most people. Still might be a better investment longterm as have just paid 500 to have clutch replaced in Fiesta and also another 150 for a new exhaust.

Due it's NCT in April so it might be time to sell on and replace.

Grand motor for the price, Kalos are very reliable and if you can get a 06 one with low milage for under 5k go for it.I wouldn't be nervous about buying from a private dealer at all, they are Daewoo's which are more reliable than Eire's favourite petrol motors like Golfs, 307's etc.I would go for the hatchback myself, easier to shift on in the future and no real difference performance wise between 1.2 and 1.4, but that will make a big difference to a learner driver looking for a car.

I dont know whats the story with the warranty on these, are they 5 year?

I would get something 05 myself that has done the nct and has low milage, huge choice and no one wants these cars for some reason. Why I dont know because mechanically there as good as any small motor. All of them in Dublin, so maybe go up with cash in hand? I would be offering 3800 for below one and taking it away for max 4000 with some kind of warranty.

They have two hatchbacks 04 & 05 and one saloon which is a 06. The 06 is 5995 which is a bit saucy. BUT, it does say in the description of the 06 that they have a number of colours to choose from.

Beware of Ennis road motors. They are part of the IRC group so these cars could have easily been ex rentals cars which might put some people off. It wouldnt personally put me off but it might be worth noting when haggling the price.
