Bridal business

    Hi All,

in the planning stages of opening a bridal boutique - bridal, debs/evening,bridesmaid etc. Based in the south east. My question is, as brides what is the most important factor when looking for your dress.
I am thinking of going down the route of having a line of gowns in the style of other designers along with having original designers.
Looking to cater for all markets really. I know some people are dubious of "copy dresses" but if the quality was excellent would it bother you as a bride if your dress was not an original. As you all know there is a lot of money to be saved. This would all be above board, brides-to-be would know it isn't an original dress but could see the quality for themselves and then decide.

I have dabbled with this idea as a home based business and have some relative success. Issue was people wanted to see the dress in person. So if the stock was on hand they could see the quality for themselves.

Would you quality permitting buy a dress that was not a designer original??

Any feedback on issue would be appreciated.

Would it not be illegal to copy other people's designs?

For me price would be more important than the designer.
I didn't really know any of the designer names when I was buying and the shop I bought in stocked about 3 different designer types.

I just tried on a few until I found the style that I wanted / suited me. Then kept trying on this style of dress until I picked out the one I bought.

To me I didn't really care who made it, as long as the shop owner could tell me that they could reliably order in this dress that suited me.
In the shop I went to they decided to only buy in dresses up to a certain price range. Which I found helpful because I knew what the top price was, so I knew trying on the dresses that they would all be within my budget.

    Let me clarify,

"Copy dresses" are not exactly the same as designer dresses. A manufacturer makes the dress in the style of a certain design that may be a well known designer for example. They don't claim to be that designer. And the dress works out much much cheaper.

You could say they are basing there own design on that of designer dresses but they are not using the same pattern. Hope this helps in trying to clarify where i'm coming from with my business idea

Thats far enough. From your own point of view, I would be careful though.

You wouldn't want to get yourself into trouble.

I think there is a huge market out there for people who would want to get their dresses made but cant find anyone who would make it for a reasonable amount.

    Best of luck with it
