2006 SEAT Leon strange tyre wear

    Hi all,

I put 4 new pirelli 225-45-17 p6000's on my car at 48k km. The car is almost touching 70k km now. The fronts are almost down to the wear indicators. I thought the backs were practically new however checking the air pressures at the weekend i noticed that they are almost bald, but just in the centre of the tyre, the passenger side one more so than the drivers side. The outside threads look perfect.

Apart from being a little annoyed with myself for not checking them properly, any suggestions on what could be the trouble? The tracking was done when the tyres were replaced but i would've thought the backs would well out last the fronts.

If anyone has any thoughts it would be appreciated. Its been 95 percent motorway mileage too so i'm just hoping nothing is wrong.

Usually baldness just in the centre line in the tread is caused by overinflation.Did you check the pressure in them? How do the edges of the tyre look?

You have been driving wiht over inflated tyres, this has caused a buldge in the centre of the tyre, therefore wearing the centre of the tyre.

Under inflation would cause the outside of the tyres to wear.

hey, tyres have always been inflated as per manufacturers guidelines. Was on seatcupra.net earlier and did a few searches. Turns out its a common fault for the passenger rear side to wear first closely followed by the drivers side. They say that the geometry was out, but mine has been done when the tyres were replaced.

I'm kinda worried that getting the alignment done wont fix the problem though. Appreciate the replies guys

You're correct, allignment won't fix an over-inflation issue.
No type of wheel mis-alignment will cause the center of the tyre to wear, unless you've been driving on rails...

You say you inflated the tyres as per manufacturers specification but which pressure did you use? There are usually two listed - one for half load and one for full load. If you filled to full load pressure and drove with half load then this may have caused your problem.

Are these manufacturer spec wheel sizes of have you changed from the original equipment?

No, the wheels are standard with the car. The car does however have a Sport-Up pack which gives sports suspension of that makes a difference.

I used the half load figures! The ride is hard enough as it is.

Check the below for info. I'm going to give a SEAT dealer a shout in the morning to clarify things. Feel like an idiot for not noticing before this but I def followed things to the letter. When Ed China starts doing wheel alignment on Wheeler Dealers I usually fall asleep. I know SFA about toe-in and all that. I should clarify that when i say the middles are worn, the edge on the inside is also badly worn where as the outside is like brand new, however the tyre on one side is significantly worse.

    Thanks again for suggestions lads
