We have an 06 Suzuki Swift 3 door gl model. I've noticed over the past few days that the car is very sluggish & when I change gear the engine is roaring & the rev clock is going high up to the 4/5000. The car then calms down but it happens whenever I push hard on the accelerator.

We only had it serviced a while ago and it's not due a service for another 6/7000 kms. I'm reluctant to take it to a garage without having a rough idea what's the problem. Anybody out there have any idea what's the problem?

OP, when you change gear and take your foot off the clutch pedal, does the car speed up significantly when the revs rise or does the engine rev and the car stays at the same speed?

The revs only really rise when I put my foot down on the accelerator. The thing is that the car is not really picking up speed like it would normally but is quite sluggish. The clutch still feels quite smooth, is it normal for a 3yr old car to need a clutch replacement?
    Thanks for your replys

Is the car still in warranty, if so take it to the dealer you bought it off and let them diagnose the problem. It will take a good mechanic seconds to diagnose a clutch problem.

Usually a clutch will only go that quickly if it has been abused. Most commonly this is caused by the driver resting their foot on the clutch pedal while driving.

If the clutch is gone enough to effect performance like you say it will be very noticable when you change gear with the engine reving and sounding like the driver is feathering the clutch when in fact the driver has already taken their foot off the pedal.

There is a simple way to test your clutch.

Find yourself a nice open space with room to maneuvre (empty car park)

Put the car into neutral, park up and pull the handbrake. Now press the clutch, put it into third and apply about a quarter gas (revs at ~1500-2000).

Now let out the clutch as if you were to drive off.

If the engine doesn't stall immediately (possibly performing a little forward lurch while doing so) but rather dies slowly (or worst case scenario even keeps running), your clutch is definetly fubar'd

Just make sure you have plenty of room in front of your car, because if your handbrake is also crap then the car will shoot forward and you don't want to hit anything :D

    Hi
I had a 07 Suzuki Swift GLX and I got recall notices on the handbrake, clutch and a general recall notice for the engine. Get it checked out, it could be a fault in the batch. I have now sold mine and got another recall notice a couple of weeks ago!
