US Congress clears broadband subsidies in stimulus package Monday 16 February 2009

The US House of Representatives and Senate have approved a final version of an economic stimulus package for the country. President Barack Obama is expected to sign in the coming days the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which offers in total USD 787 billion in spending as well as tax relief. The package includes USD 7.2 billion in subsidies for extending fixed and mobile broadband access to under- and unserved areas of the country. The US Federal Communications Commission will work on a plan for expanding access to broadband services, and The National Telecommunications & Information Administration will be charged with handing out the billions in grant money, with help from the FCC
