Octavia 1.9TDI Brake Pedal

    Hi,

    I have an issue with a 2001 Octavia 1.9 TDI. If you pump the brake pedal when the engine is running, it gradually gets harder and harder, till you have no assist at all. Its been getting gradually worse....

    I guess the usual suspects would be:-
    1. Vacuum Pump problem
    2. Vacuum Leak on the connecting pipe
    3. Vacuum Leak / seal problem on the servo unit

    Is there a common fault on any of the above items with this car?

    Is there a connection point, where you can connect on a vacuum gauge, to see if the vacuum is dissipating? (although i guess this still won't give the route cause.. )

    It happens at either time.... although it seems to be more obvious when crawling in traffic, as your more likely to be on/off the brake pedal....

    When you get into the car do you have assist before you start the engine? There should be enough vacuum for 2 or 3 stops in reserve (and it should hold for several days).

    If not, you have a leak in the servo unit.

    normal in many cars with abs and or brake assist.
    pumping the pedal is not a normal way to brake in cars with this system hence you are pulling out pressure faster than the pump can put it in.
    Try another car same model (if you can) or even a passat with similar brake system.
