Strange derailleur problem

I'm hoping that some of the wise folk on this form can help me get my head around what's happening with my rear derailleur. My new year's resolution was to do more basic maintenance myself, making use of my new bike stand. I was fairly chuffed with myself at managing to carry out the complex operation of changing front and back brake blocks, though maybe I shouldn't be too chuffed until I've tried it out on the road.

My rear derailler has been a bit bit noisy of late, so I had a good look at it. To my surprise, I found that it seems that the chain is running on the outside of the metal tab that sticks out from the bottom wheel of the derailleur. I would have assumed that the chain should be on the inside of this tab. But I can't see how it would have got on the outside, without opening up the chain and reclosing it.

Have a look at these pictures, and see am I right in thinking that the chain should be on the inside? Is there anyway I can get it back under the tab onto the bottom wheel, ideally without breaking open the chain (which might well be beyond my technical skills).

    Thanks in advance...

PS The chain did get a good oiling after the photos.

THanks - Would that be the two allen-key bolts on the flat surface to unscrew the cage? Any idea how the chain could have got outside?

    Cheers

Just unscrew the allan key on the lower jockeywheel and you should be able to just slide the two plates apart, enough to put the chain back in.

    odd one alright !

Thanks - that did the business, though the acid test will be when I'm back on the bike on Thursday.

Thanks for all for the suggestions.
