Circumcision. Urgent Advice Needed.

I suffer from phimosis and have been advised to get a circumcision. The date of my operation has already bee set. I am just wondering can anyone relate to my situation and give me avice.

My glans is always covered by foreskin, they say that having it removed feels exactly the same except that your foreskin isnt there. But whenever I manage to pull back my glans is abnormally hyper-sensitive nd causes pain, flinching and extreme discomfort if it is even touched let alone rubbed or stimulated. Does anyone experience this? and have you went ahead with circumcision? If any ****, stimulation or normal sexual experience is to be possible there will need to be a serious de-sensitisation of the head.

All constructive comments would be appreciated but in particular i would value people with experience in the above siuation.

It will take a bit of time but it will desensitize.

it will be uncomfortable for some time, but it does become desensitized so try not to worry about it too much. even just walking will be somewhat uncomfortable with the friction, but it's that friction day to day that leads to it becoming less sensitive.

There's a lot of stories and info from people who have been threough the procedure before here , reading that and posting in that thread for advice and asking any questions would be a good idea I reckon.

Best of luck with the procedure

I had a circumcision at the start of this year. I had Phimosis too,i could retract my foreskin when flaccid but never erect. I'll admit,I was a bit apprehensive about the whole operation at first,as i'm sure anyone would be.. especially when its on such an important part of your body. I was mainly scared of losing sensation.

For the 1st week and a half after the operation the glans was extremely sensitive and i found it hard to move around, but after that it was grand. The glans is well used to being exposed now,not to a level where i can't feel anything or enjoy myself though. I find that my orgasms are better now due to the tightness of my penis, pardon the crudeness.

Sure its a toss up between having a covered glans during sex for the rest of your life or,in my experience,a slightly de-sensitised exposed glans.

Overall,i'm glad i went for it and wouldn't take it back.

P.S. as orestes said, there is plenty of threads on this forum about it and the information is great in them!! just search.

    Good luck!

Thanks for all your help guys. Appreciate all your input.

But the thing is I haven't had the op yet, but my head is ultra sensitive NOW wen exposed nd always has been. I WANT to lose a lot of sensitivity because it is unbarably sensitive right no wen exposed i'm afraid that after the foreskin is removed that it wont lose enuff sensitivity nd will be too hard to have sex.

I've heard all the stories bout people bein afraid to lose sensitivity but i am the opposite. i need to loose a lot. i am very nervous about the op.

At the moment I am UNCUT, is my hypersensitivity normal? do any phimosis sufferers out there have experience on this?

    Thanks.

    Yes it's completely normal.

It's sensitive because of the phimosis, once the foreskin is gone it will be VERY sensitive for a while but it will desensitize.

Hi, i was a phimosis sufferer and i was circumcised about this time last year. I had exactly the same concerns as you in that my glans were hypersensitive and i wanted them to be desensitized.

Following the op your glans will continue to gradually desensitize for a few months util the reach a normal level, the first 2 weeks you'll be walking like a cowboy and be carefull when you're drying yourself with a towel

Here's a post i put on a related thread. Had it done last month and five weeks on not a bother. Go for it and dont worry. I'll add a bit extra to the end of the post.

Had it done in early january, and 2 weeks have passed. Had to visit a urologist in november with an unrelated matter, and he informed me what i already knew, that i needed the snip. Had it done in the Mater Private, and the surgeons name was Kiaran O'Malley. Asked him was it common for it to be done, and he said he did out 7 a week, so its alot more common that people think. Didn't tell anybody by the way!

Arrived at 8am and was checked in, at about 8.30ish i was in a bed and a few checks were done by the nurse and the surgeon came to see me and went through the procedure. At about 10.15 i was brought into pre-theatre, and more checks were done and i was wired up for the operation. At 10.50 is was in for the anesthetic, asked the anesthatist how long i would be under and he said 30 mins. Woke up later and chanced a look, and all i could see was a cock shaped bandage which was bigger than normal. Then the surgoen came in to see me and said everything went well and that it was a pretty tight foreskin. Then ththe anesthestist came in to say hello as well. Was eating tea and toast at around 12.15 and aftered i had a piss i was told i could go home. Have to say, all the staff in the Mater Private were very professional about such a delicate matter. There wasnt much pain at this stage as they had also given a local anesthetic during the procedure. Before i left they gave me a few A4 sheets with the does and donts. Was hone by 14.15 waching day time tv, murder she wrote, diagnosis murder, deal or no deal etc.. Couldn't watch Seoighe for obvious reasons! The first day i was grand, still had the bandage, was on pain killers and slept well.

Woke up with the dawn horn, didn't look at it and went back to sleep. Had a bath and the bandage came off, my cock looked like it had been in a fight and come off the worst. Got dressed and wore boxer shorts. Not a good idea and the gland that used to be covered was now exposed and i was walking like john wayne with a groin strain! I was swollen but painkillers helped. Bought tight fitting boxers, which are a must as it gives stability and limits movement of the lad. Had it done on a friday and was back in work on the monday, told my collegues i had pulled a groin muscle in the gym, so no one was the wiser.

Found it easier to re-bandage it for the next few days to save it hitting off anything, the only problem was that the banagde would slip and i'd end up pissing over myself. Pissing sitting down was easier, but then statred to do it standing up.

Over the next few days it was still swollen, my dick was massive, which usually is a good thing, but not in this case! Rang the surgoen and he saw me asap in his rooms, said there was no problems and that it was healing up well. He didn't charge me either.

Over the next few days, the swelling went down, and the sensitvity is improving. I am having a shower every morning and a bath in the evening. It is getting better. The advise sheet says no sexual activity for 3-4 weeks, which i presume includes an allied irish, so avoiding all that at the moment. I'd get up on the back of a chair at this stage!

The only slight problem i has was that my piss smelt awful, so after check the internet, i presumed i had a urinary tract infection, so went to my GP (who is female), she again was very professional and was very interested to hear about it, and she gave me some mild antibiotics, which have done the trick.

Its 2 weeks now since it was done and all is well. Dont have any pain, but is still a bit uncomfortable to touch. Its weird looking at it a first but you get used to it, and remember the majority of men in the world (60%) have it done. So far so good.

(Extra Bit). Five weeks on and everything is grand. Had a bath every day for a month and all the stiches finally disolved. Everything works properly. It is advisable for the first few days to line the inside of the under wear with vasoline as prevents friction with the previously hooded parts. Had an allied irish after four long weeks but no nat king yet!

I wouldn't worry too much about the operation, i personally was ****ting it before the procedure, but once i went into the hospital i statred to calm down. It is uncomfortable for the first week or so, and you will walk like you've been shot in the balls, but there was no pain per say more a slight uncomfortableness. Surprisingly this procedure is more common that you think, but if you dont want to tell anyone about it, there is no need.

I have gone unregistered for this, but if anybody has any questions, i'll use the nickame 'snip 1' and check back over the next few days. Feel free to ask any questions and the best of luck.

Hi, not going Unreg, dont really care who knows.

Just want to say thanks to the OP, i had the same problem (Phimosis) just never new what it was called, and im a little amazed to see it's more common than i thought, that's a lot of assurance for a start

After much comtemplation over this last day since reading i've decided that i'll get the snip (hopefully) in a few months
might have to take my two weeks holidays off work for the recovery period but seems worth it. (also, i've no travel plans) anyway.

OP, if you get it done, would you mind keeping us updated as to recover and such?
    thanks.

I had it done, and it's not as bad as people seem to make it out to be, really.

You'll spend half a day in hospital. They knock you out before going into the operation. You go into the operating room on one of those trolley things you lie on and they put a mask on your face. Seemingly 10 seconds later, you wake up in your hospital room, with a nurse giving you toast and tea.

I don't know if its because i was still falling unconscious from the anesthesia and feeling drugged or not, but that was the nicest toast i ever ate!

Anyway, they'll make you take a piss in the hospital before you go home (to make sure you're not bleeding or anything) and then they walk you out to a friend or family member to take you home (they don't let you use public transport).

They'll give you some stuff to take to rub on it and tell you to take salty baths and generic stuff like that. Everyone's recovery is different, so the rest of the post is my personal experience:

I was walking funny for about four days. On the way home from the hospital I stopped into Smyths to check out what games/WWE figures they had (i knew i'd have a boring week ahead), so as you can imagine, if i was capable of walking in there semi-normally, then its really not that bad. Went home, used some of the gel stuff they gave me (it's totally and completely useless, by the way).

I was never in pain. A little discomfort (particularly when lying down to go to bed, or when going to the toilet) but i'd do it all again no problem.

You'll be feeling uncomfortable when you're walking around for about a week. at the end of the week you'll be capable of walking normally, but it wont be very comfortable. Around the house, i recommend buying some tracksuit pants in Penneys that are too big for you, and wear them with no underwear (so there's nothing rubbing against it). At the end of two weeks, you should be ready to go.

The hospital will either book a doctors appointment for you, or tell you to do it yourself, for about a week and a half after the operation. This is just to make sure you havent gotten an infection or anything. It got ugly for me here, as i did somehow manage to get an infection. So that took another week off me. I just had to use another gel the doctor prescribed and take a daily bath. Make sure i didn't do anything physically (it was during a hot summer, so they didn't want me to sweat at all). I felt fine, but i did it because the doctor told me to.

Actually, despite a letter from my doctor, and a form from the hospital, i pretty much lost my job for missing time. Managers told me "we understand that you have to miss this time, but its just the fact that you are missing so much time). Pricks.

But yeah, there's really nothing to worry about. Pick up a copy of GTA IV or something, and just sort out a room in your house so you can sit comfortably whilst using the XBox or the Internet or whatever it is you like to do around the house.

At the moment, (about two years from the operation) I'm not sensitive down there, in the way that i can walk/sit/lie/etc. comfortably, but sensitive enough that oral sex/sex/general foreplay/masturbation is also a pretty fun time.

From my experience with the whole issue, you don't have a lot to worry about. It's pretty straightforward, and you get free tea and toast, so its all good.

After the op, I'd assume there's a fair amount of shrinkage going on? How do they go about bandaging up such shrinkage in a manner that stays bandaged? ... if ya get my meaning.

oi! there's no fricking shrinkage!! they just cut off the skin, nothing else ;)

anyway, they give you an injection that stops you getting an erection for about 24 hrs, and they certainly don't do the op on an erect penis, so it doesn't really cause a problem. My bandage fell off the next morning, and I imagine that's fairly typical, the doc told me not to worry about it, just let it fall off when it falls off.

I'd be careful, if I were you. 'The Snip' is an entirely different operation to a circumcision (i.e. a vasectomy). I'd recommend not calling it that anymore.

If you tell your mates "I had the Snip", they might look at you a bit weird. But if you tell the surgeon that you're "In to get the Snip done", you mightn't be the happiest afterwards :)

[Now, enough of that and I'll let this thread get back on topic. Sorry mods!]

    Great Advice by All!

Just wondering if anyone can advice of the cost of seeing a urologist (privately vs publicaly) and the subseqeuent costs of circumcision.

    Cheers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166,026 ✭✭✭✭LegacyUser

I went private. You'd be lookin at bout €200.00 before you are even givin a date for your op. between a GP visit, letter of referal, urologist appoinment and initital consultation. as far as i know public is free, but you'd be waitin a lot longer. even the wait with goin private is long enough. i saw my GP in jan nd got my referal to the concultant urologist in april! my friends had it done nd were lucky, only had to wait a month or two. then 2 weeks to a month for de operation. anyway it takes a while t get de ball rollin in my exp. private is very ****in expensive tho. u pay anythin between €100.00 nd €150.00 per consultation nd de op itself can be up to €1,600!!

it's just the fear of the unknown man, there's nothing you can do about that until you actually get the op done. But I promise you this: I feel exactly the same way - down there - now as I did before the op. I know that's hard to imagine now, because you can't imagine it being anything but ultra-sensitive, but remember, if it weren't the case, they'd never have done a second one. The other bit of advice I'll give you is, after the op, try to be patient. It seems to be the case for a lot of people, certainly me, that it seems to hardly heal at all for the first four or five days, and then you wake up on day six and it's healed 90% overnight. You'll have a follow-up appointment six weeks or so afterwards, and for 99% of people who get the op done, they've forgotten all about it at that stage.

Not to pimp the men's health forum too much, but there's a stickied thread in there (not the best phrase!) where you can ask as many questions as you like - the thread is also my own chronicle, from first GP's visit to a year or so later.

Really all you need to know: If I had to go back in time and do it again, I wouldn't even think about it for a second.

I had it done in 2007 at the Bonds in Glasnevin. Before then it was so tight it had only ever pulled back over the head a few times even though I was 27 at the time and when it did it was very sore and sensitive. The lube on condoms made sex not a problem but I knew I had to eventually get it done. I’ll tell you the truth about my experience so you can make your mind up but before I do, know that I honestly have no regrets and would do it all again.

I had it done one afternoon, everything was fine and I didn’t feel any pain except maybe that night when I got an erection. I had planned to take a week or maybe two off work to recover. One of those days I woke up and found blood on the bandage, not an awful lot but enough to give me a shock. I was washing the thing like a mother f*cker but something wasn’t right. It was painful when I walked and didn’t seem to be healing. I went back to the specialist and he said it somehow managed to get infected.

I ended up being off work for a month, was bandaged and in a bit of pain most of that time. Anyway the antibiotics eventually cleared it up and I had no regrets. Things are now great, my girlfriend prefers it and if anything the sex is better. On one hand its not unbearably sensitive as it was but on the other hand now that parts of the head are exposed that were previously covered it gives you a new and better sensation during a romp.

Mine sounds like a bit of a horror story and maybe the worst case scenario but it actually wasn’t as bad as that. Get it done is my advice. Oh and sit down when going for a p*ss for the first few days

HI lads. original poster here. well, got de job done last wed. went well no complications. staff in mater private are bang on. very professional. got it done at ten that mornin nd out de same day.

I am in Day 5 now. I gotta say I'm really surprised. So far I have felt no pain. None whatsoever. I'm only on mild/medium pain killers nd i'm not even takin as many as i'm meant to. I'm diabetic as well which means its meant to hurt like hell in high blood sugars nd heal slower. Always thought meself to be a bit of a wuss nd have a really low pain threshhold as well if i'm bein honest.

I've had little pain walking and moving, no pain urinating or washing. The bandages fell off in the bath on the second day. completely. It looked GRAND. No cuts, bruises, discolouration or bleeding. There was mild swelling but hardly noticable. The only thing i could complain about was that the skin on the glans shrivled up, dried and flaked off leavin a new layer underneath (sorry if that's too graphic). Anyway it looks totally normal now bar the stitches.

Is dat normal. It's de opposite of what i expected. I'm nearly worried its goin TOO well nd that there's some nasty shock around de corner. haha.

The head is slightly sensitive nd gives me those 'oh' moments when stuff hits off it. but hey, it hasnt been fully exposed in years nd its onl out 4 days so this is normal yeah?

thanks lads for givin me the confidence to quit bein a biatch and just get it done.
