VRT question

If you are a UK resident and you move to Ireland, is the VRT on your first car waived? But if I then decide to sell-is it true you have to wait a year?

What documents do you need to do this? Where can I read about the terms and conditions?

    Thanks

    Rough summary:
    - you have to be resident outside Ireland for over 12 months
    - you have to have owned the car for six months or more
    - you cannot sell it for 12 months afterwards
    - you have to prove you meet the criteria (typically you are interviewed in the vehicle registration office to ensure you meet all criteria

They are fairly strict on this. For example, only you (and possibly your partner) are allowed drive the car for the 12 months afterwards.

    Thanks for the replys,

So if someone has just moved over from UK to Ireland, and they buy a car from the UK...can they just wait 6 months and get the VRT exemption?

No, if they've already moved here they cannot. They have to have owned the car while resident in the UK.

Please read the link that was provided ... the answer is there.

You have to prove you owned and were using the car in UK for six months before you moved here. If you are already here then it's too late to bring in a car VRT free.

I think this can be waived if you come upon hard times within the 12 months.
