No, not compulsory, but there is talk of it being brought in, so get your test quick.

As Sean said, you can walk in and sit a test without even seeing a car:p. Not that you'll pass or anything! The current legislation states that you must have held your first learner permit for at least 6 months before sitting the test. This means you can apply for your test before the 6 months are up, but you may only sit the test when you have held your license for 6 months or more.

no, it's not compulsory but so worth it, if you want any chance of passing you will need to have done a few lessons, the testers will know by the way you drive if you have ever had lessons.

i passed my test after only 4 and a half months of driving, had about 15 lessons but it has to be the reason i passed. btw i had my provisonl for about 6 months before i started driving just incase you think i did it before i had my licence for 6 months

The examiners cannot penalise a candidate because they think they may not have had formal lessons. They can only assess on what happens during the test. (BTW, I'm not advocating that lessons are not required).

The 6 month restriction didn't apply to Provisional Licence holders. ;)

Is it true that if your first learner permit runs out and you get a 2nd permit do you have to do a certain amount of lessons to do the test again?

This seems to be a recurring theme around these parts recently. Currently there is no requirement to take driving lessons, and no need to show any proof of having completed any kind of driving lessons.

You're confused. You must present evidence of failing/booking a driving test to your licensing authority in order to obtain your third and subsequent permit.

Ahhh, its at times like this when I read the learning to drive threads that I consider myself lucky to pass my driving test first time the day before the new laws were introduced!

Back on topic, I would seriously recommend getting driving lessons before you do your test. If you don't think you need them, you do. There are so many little things that you have to do eg. the correct order of looking in the mirrors as you make a turn etc!

There was a mistake with my test, I only got 1 weeks notice! I rang them and they told me that there was a batch sent out at the wrong date and mine was one of them. I could only find one driving instructor that was free and done a lesson the evening before and the morning of my driving test! Without these lessons I would have failed. The driving test is not about being a good driver, it is about doing what they want you to.
