I have been asked by a tour guide to help him over the Summer months. I have done tour guiding but I do not have a D1 licence. Does anyone know where I apply or who do I ring? I don't know if this is the right forum but any help would be appreciated.

Try the Learning to Drive Forum, although I'll try to help here.

First off, you need to schedule a theory test for Category D using the DTTS Website. As far as I'm aware, you have to hold a C or C1 licence before you can get a D1 learner permit so you may need to do the C/C1 theory test first, although I stand to be corrected. If you do (a quick call will tell you) then the process is the same as this to get the C1 but it will take 6 months also before you can apply for that test, and then another 6 months minimum to get the D1.

When you pass, you then to first apply for a learner permit for Cat D1. You do this by getting a form at your local motor tax office, library or Garda station - it's the same form as for a regular car. Just tick the D1 box and send it off. You'll get a permit in the post and that enables you to get lessons, and after 6 months you can take the practical test and if you pass, you'll have a full D1.

Even if you have the C/C1 already though, I reckon you're cutting it fine for this summer.

That is not correct. (C and C1 are for rigid trucks).

The OP would be required to have a full category B licence and be over 21 years of age before applying for a theory test and learner permit for a D1.

OP - you can also go straight from a full B to a category D (large bus). If you pass a driving test in category D, you'll also be entitled to a full licence in D and D1.

    ok here are the requirements.

    1. You have to be 21
    2. You need to hold a full category B (car) licence before you can apply
    3. If its going to be a profession then you also need to do a Certificate of Professional Competency (CPC) which is an extra theory and practical test along with the RSA theory and practical test.

Thanks for the info. I have a full B licence. I am going to contact the road safety authority to see what the story is. Hopefully it will not take too long when I tell them of the circumstances!

When you apply for the test, tell them that you are willing to be tested at very short notice.
