Not quite a Classic, but my brother is having a problem with a 1997 E230, in that the steering lock isn't releasing when you try turning the ignition key as though the ignition lock has jammed. Any of the Merc experts on here have any suggestions?

Moved from classic cars to motors

As long as the battery is full intact, and everything is working as normal, it should just unlock like any other car.

Could it be that he's not turning the wheel while trying to turn ignition?
I know in some cars you've got to *rock* the steering wheel a little (to the freeplay side) to release the lock, then turn the key it should just unlock straight away.

No, rocking the wheel from side to side doesn't release the steering lock, and the ignition key doesn't turn

if its the metal flick key type, then it sounds like the ignition switch is faulty which is quite common on that model.Usually the barrel(the piece that matches the key) can be replaced but to do that the key has to turn freely.if it wont turn, you will need a new switch and barrel and the retainer piece for the barrel
