Computer Freezing

I've had this problem for the last 18 or more months, really. My computer just, apparently randomly, freezes. Out of nowhere everything stops, the PC goes completely dead - No hard drive activity or anything. The screens stay on but they're just, well, frozen. To get it working again I have to turn it off by the button then turn it back on again.

It happens completely ramdomly, and in different frequencies. For example, it might not freeze for 2 days, but, then one day it might freeze 5 times.

It happened with 32-bit Vista Home Premium, and I'm now using 64-bit Vista Ultimate - with the exact same problem.

I suspect that the problem might lie with my Creative X-Fi Platinum - it started happening shortly after I installed it. I've always updated to the latest drivers from Creative whenever they're released.

Does anybody have any ideas what a solution might be?

    Thanks.

P.S. Oh, I've been using Windows 7 for the past month and it hasn't frozen once - even when I'm using the same drivers for my X-Fi. And it has happened with three different Vista installs, each a unique OS - so it isn't a fault with my OS install disk or anything like that.

Well if it happened shortly after installing that creative sofware , just uninstall it and see if if it helps

I'll do that tomorrow - I've just never gotten around to taking the card out -, but, to be honest I was more looking for a solution. I don't exactly want to have to make my X-Fi redundant.

Well the first step in troubleshooting any issue is to find the culprit. You need to see if the sound card is causing the issues. If it is, then maybe newer drivers will fix the problem.
