used sky+ box: can/how to do this?

    Hello,

I'm looking to shift to a Sky+ box (I currently have a Digibox). However, I'm not exactly inclined to pay €100 for installation, given that I've the necessary wiring done already.

So I'm looking around at second-hand Sky+ boxes (seem to be quite a few folks who've upgraded to Sky+HD of late for some reason!) but I've a couple of questions about the process, since I'd end up being somewhat outside of the standard process for Sky.

(The last time I went "off-script" with Sky I ended up needing to pay for a new subscription card and re-up for another 12 month contract...)

    * I've an active subscription card in my Digibox.
    * I presume that I can get any Sky+ box from eBay, buy-n-sell, or similar (anything I should be aware of here? any manufacturer that is better than others? are UK boxes okay?)
    * Is it then as simple as putting my subscription card into the Sky+ box and then calling Sky with the serial number of the Sky+ box to "activate" it?

    Thanks,
    :-Phil

from what i remember getting my sky+ box uses twin tuners , thats how you can record and watch another channel at the same time , the 100 euro installation is prob for the upgrading to two tuners

It would have two tuners, but I've two lines from the dish to where the sky+ box would go; I have two Digiboxes in the same room connected to a Windows Media Center PC but the PC is working on giving up the ghost...

Yes, you can buy a new box no problem. I have two Sky+ boxes and both work fine

Interesting one that. Your card is paired to your Sky box, as per the encryption, so you mightn't be able to do this. I can't see why not however. I've been looking to do this but whether Sky will allow you do it I don't know.

Ring them up, give them the number of the card and the serial no of the box (they'll tell you how to find both), they'll reset it and your Sky + will start to work shortly afterwards. The recording end will probably take a while to kick in but you should be able to view straight away. When I did it recently they told me there was no need for the phone line connection (as I wasn't getting a subsided box) but that I was taking on an additional 12 month contract. I won't be changing from it so I was satisfied not to argue about that. To be fair to Sky, I found it a really easy process.
