UPC Cancellation & MMDS Ariel

I am very excited that I am eventually breaking away from NTL/UPC this week and getting a Sky+ box.

At the momenty I have a UPC MMDS ariel on my chimney and when I called to cancel they said that they equipment does not get returned to them. I forgot to ask about the ariel.

So my question is ... do they ever come to take away the ariel and if they don't is it of any use to me in pickingup channels. I live in an area with zero channel reception and if there was some benefit to be gained from having the ariel it'd be great. Its wired down through the house through a connection in the attic.

I suppose it is a good question....

The best I can think of is if it is suitable for terrestrial DTT (digital)??? From wikipedia it says the MMDS service is sent over air between 2GHz to 3GHz frequencies.

The current DTT is being used on the UHF band with frequencies from 471MHz (Ch21) to 847MHz (Ch68). Not sure if any DTT channels are broadcast over VHF.

What I can't answer is what the range of the actual antenna is!? If we can find out the range, then we can summise the possible usages.

They seldom come back for aerials anymore I used to do it for them until they realised it was costing them too much money trying to recover them, so demand it's removal as they clearly state its their property...

Their aerial is no use in receiving terrestrial signal and there is no DTT on VHF. The government will sell licenses to telecommunications companies as soon as the switch over is complete.

The MMDS mesh dish has a built in 2.6GHz downconverter.
Unlike Sky gear which all belongs to you from day1 and gets free channels when you cancel, there are NO free channels on Cable/MMDS. The Mesh Dish is theirs and is only for MMDS. It won't pickup any other TV.

I'll email them after they cut me off and see what they have to say

Before the underground network got installed locally to me, I had one of the MMDS aerials on my chimney. Now, if I still had the aerial on my chimney and decided to cancel the NTL subscription, I would be insistent that NTL come out and remove the aerial.

I remember there was some NTL subscriber on here recently who removed the aerial from their chimney and dropped it off into NTL's offices when they cancelled their subscription and they even asked for a receipt of delivery of said aerial!

I wouldn't fancy the hassle of going up on the roof to get but on the other hand I do look forward to the row with them to get it removed.
