x in my battery icon

    Hi,

last night i tried to turn on my macbook - couldnt and thought well its probaly just out of battery so i plug in the charger and it turn on - grand.

So when I look up to the charger icon there is an ''x'' through the battery. When I click on it it says ''no batteries availible'' and coconut battery wont tell me any info and shuts down quickly after I start it up.

In the ''about this mac'' and ''power'' screen it says the battery is not installed.

I tried letting it charge fully and then see, no effect.
I tried letting it discharge and then fully recharge, no effect.
I tried taking the battery out and then back in, no effect.
I tried using the hardware test by holding d on restart, wouldnt show up.
I tried holding aplle key option p and r , wouldnt work.
Tried holding ''c'' on start up, no luck.

the charger, after this problem started, charged it up. The leds on the bottom told me roughly how charged it was.

    But they stopped working too.

The laptop cant start up without the charger

    But!

wgen I take the charger out it seems to run fine on battery power - ie my battery was there and working fine, or seemed to be.

So it was working but needed a charger to bust it on and then worked without it
when i let it drain and recharge - wont work without the battery and contains no charge

Okay now when i check the leds on the bottom they do the flashing and then stop to tell they are out of batery.

    Any help???!!?? please!

You had better sit down.....they cost €139 on the apple store.

Nearly passed out myself when looking for one for my 12" PB.

Think I will just use the power chord.

You might have a case for the small claims court - product not fit for intended purpose. Depending on your battery cycles etc. My MBP is close to three years old and the battery is still fine. Regardless of warranty if you did not abuse your battery you should be entitled to a new one for free.

Ring Apple, and plead. I got a new one out of them; my macbook was greater than 2-years old.

Although a battery is a perishable, yours appears to have died, dead. It has not become less efficient over time due to use.

Apple have an admitted defect for their batteries, and do operate a battery exchange program. I think it might apply for up to two years.

apple support said its out of warranty end of story

i made the point its time of usability didnt decrease it just stopped dead suddenly and said i only had about 250 or so cycles on it

ye i think i get it for 219 with student discount - i might try to see what the ''macshop'' say about it before i buy one - will prolly have to buy one anyway

they did say they would fix my casing for free tho = to bad its in the arsehole part of nowhere in blanach and will take at least a week

thanks everyone - any more advic would be greatly appreciated.

My gf had this exact problem and got it replaced under the exchange program. Surely yours is eligible for it despite your warranty status?

I'll have to check, but I'm fairly sure that my MBP was out of warranty but the battery was covered under the battery exchange program.
But if Apple support have said that no is no,then it looks like you'll have to dig deep...!!!

Have you tried resetting the PMU? Different methods for different machines, so search on Apple support site.

was in the macshop today and it turns out its the whole power unit so looks like im ****ed - hoping to god that the house insurance covers it and i get at least 750 maybe even the 891 for the bottom end white macbook

essentially the one i have but new and an extra gig of ram if no insurance for ''accidental damage'' or the likes - boo-ourns for apple I love this macbook -

its bleedin rapid - will use this laptop as a desktop as it works perfect besides the lack of a power unit or whatever is wrong with it

anyone know if i order a macbook tomorrow from the student apple ireland site - how long will it take to get to an post ? Cheers!

Dont be foolish - like I said, just because it's out of warranty does not mean apple don't have to fix it for you. Get on the phone and ask for the customer relations person. Mention the small claims court and your statutory rights. If that fails - lodge a case yourself - costs €15, you can do it online and you dont even have to attend court. A judge will decide. But it wont get that far because apple will just settle with you.

I can't believe the amount of people who do not understand their basic rights.

its half a year out of warranty

plus its covered by insurance - or so the insurance form says - we'll see if they pay the 891 euro

plus i cant afford to wait the months that will take to complete

if i can get the money from the insurance and get a new one within a week and use this one plugged in till then - happy days

    Doesn't mean anything.

plus its covered by insurance - or so the insurance form says - we'll see if they pay the 891 euro

If that's what you want - but you don't have to.

It will take maybe one or two weeks. You can claim on your insurance and hope it doesn't go up next year but you don't have to.

Just be aware of the other options.
