Just been announced Ireland might play Northern Ireland in a Football match on august 12 in thomand park!!

only second soccer international ever to be played outside dublin if it goes ahead!

However how do you feel about Thomand been used a soccer ground?

Can't see any reason why anyone would have a problem with that.

Just actually in a shop and seen the headline on (of all ****e reliable sources) the sun newspaper, was wondering if anybody else had heard anything reliable?

    Disgraceful!

No way should they play a foreign game in Thomand park. Makes me sick!

Why is this in the rugby forum, should it not be in either the soccer or Limerick fora?

BTW - it's Thomond, don't know if it was the headline or the OP that got it wrong.

Have to agree. Brilliant photo, and stunning irony too.

apologizes about the spelling, and since thomond park is the home of munster rugby i thaught it belonged in a rugby forum.

Heard on the radio that they are looking to play an international there but it will not be Northern Ireland. Not due to play them until 2011

Can't see the problem with it. It'll show off how great Thomond is and bring some revenue to the region.

And it will be a nightmare to people living near the stadium with the traffic

More than a big rugby game?? I think not.

I think it's a great idea. Might as well use a venue, rather than just having it sitting there (when Munster are not using it).

When did this happen? Over my dead body will they play any of those garrison games in Thomond.

Another shining example of what a shambles the FAI are imo. The IRFU may have been poor in arranging a new national rugby stadium but the FAI are a shambles. Highlights the fact that Irish football has feck all facilities in this country. Munster are damn right for letting them play, get some money back for the buliding costs.

The were a COMPLETE shambles. They have improved a bit under Delaney to be fair. They are only a shambles now.

Yeah, it's a well known fact that rugby followers walk to matches thus reducing any traffic problems when Munster play in TP.

What is the point, Thomond only has a 13,000 seated capacity, could they fit in some bucket seats to bring it up?? The RDS has 18,000 seated capacity, they should hold it there if they cannot put temp seats into Thomond.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

Well if you're gonna hold a match in Dublin anyhow, surely there are better spots? :P

I think its a good idea, I like the idea of a national team playing a few matches in various different spots, gives the opportunity to those who might not otherwise get a chance to see them play.

If its a friendly match, you do not need an all-seater stadium. Standing would be allowed, so no need to put in bucket seats. When Brazil played in Croke Park last year standing was allowed on the Hill as it was only a friendly.

    Glad to see it happening.

Football has been played in Thomond before, Limerick FC played games there back in the 1980's and early 1990's.

Thomond Park has bills to pay and a heavy mortgage on it. The problem with spending big on new facilities is that money borrowed needs to be paid back and maintanence increases.

I wouldn't be surprised if Thomond hosts gimmicky things and concerts and whatever it can organise on every available free weekend until it can pay for itself, and why not, just good management.

Simular to new Lansdowne already bidding to host as many cup finals as it can on completion (guranteed sell outs) such as Uefa Cup final and HEC final, plus some mickey mouse football tournament, plus an opening ceremony seperate from and sporting occasion which you will need to buy tickets for, plus concerts etc. etc. etc.

I wouldn't be surprised if Thomond tries to host some summer competitions, maybe a mini sevens type tournament or other random stuff just to keep the turnstiles ticking. Just get the thing paid for.

Which is why Elton John and Rod Stewart are playing. Sorely tempted :)

No No don't suggest that. It will be a nightmare to people living near the RDS with the traffic ;)
