O2, and particularly Three, are targeting the home broadband market. Vodafone don't seem to be going after the same, so no need for them to have a bigger cap. IMO, Vodafone is the only one of the three mobile operators that understands what 3G mobile broadband is supposed to be.

3G data usage is extremely taxing on the network, much more so than voice services, so it's in any operators interest to keep that as low as possible. I would doubt that 3G service providers will ever increase their caps by much more than what they currently have.

Vodaphone also cited "poor customer" experience as the reason why Nokia phones supplied by them had VOIP SIP disabled of EDGE/3G use. :)

And in my humble opinion that's a view point totally divorced from the reality of the consumers.
In many cases, 3G is the only cost effective solution. Weather it's taxing or not doesn't really matter. As masts increase in number and quality, your position will also be divorced from the reality of business.

Imagine someone saying in 1997 that line broadband isn't supposed to be for the general populace - guess what; products and technology adapt to meet the needs of consumers, not the other way around.

3's recent desision to increase their limit by the totality of Vodafone's limit (from 10 to 15GB) is also a quite pertinent choice in the remit of this discussion.

Vodafones cap is scandolous. It is the only form of "broadband" available to me. I receive decent enough speeds on it and with myself and brother using it we usually use between 15-20gb a month which is not very heavy usage for 2 people. I rang vodafone about this and they told me they had no plans to increase the cap but they also admitted they have received numerous complaints about this.

They get 500x the money per megabyte of voice calls as they do of Data. Data costs more too. It's already subsidized, no wonder they don't want to increase Cap.

What does your bill look like after going that far over the limit?
IIRC I got a message saying I was approaching the limit, charges of 2/c per mb would apply, checked the volume I was 4.5gb under the limit

Then they'd have been wrong, and divorced of reality. 3G is what it is, and it is not suited to large volume downloads. A future technology may be more suited, but it won't be the current mobile broadband.

Spectum is a limited resource. Mobile already operates near the Shannon Limit. Only having a couple of wireless bases per street will make it be a viable broadband system, technology on it's own won't. It's a physical & mathematical limit.

I too only have Vodafone BB, and its the only option available to me.

Just looked at the 02 site, and I cant beleive for €10 less per month they get 5GB more !

I can only dream about 10GB for €20 per month!

Im in line for Fixed line BB in the 2nd Qtr with Eircom, So I will drop Vodafone like a stone soon, (Im out of contract).

But if they gave me 10GB for €20 I would keep hold of them as it would be handy to have when out and about, But €30 for 5GB, they can take a run and a jump!

Terrible of them to not even consider changing despite the number of complaints they have had!

If they dont change, they will end up loosing a lot of people.

Even the new 02 voice prepay tariff is bang on now.

€20 per month and free voice calls and texts to other o2 phones! Top marks!

Come on vodafone, time to catch up!

When did the 3 Network cap change, have PAYG (Pay As You Go) customers got the higher cap too, or is it still 10GB a month?
