I'm a newbie to AV Receiver's. My question is if Irish DTT reception can be handled directly by any AV receivers i.e. are there AV receivers with MPEG4 capability?

AV Receivers don't have TV receivers built into them. I think you may be misled by the term "Receiver" - most have a radio reciever built in.

Some TVs have a DVB-T MPEG4 tuner which is capable of showing the current Irish DTV broadcasts - Panasonic Z81B I know of, I think some of the Sony models also have the same capability.

Thanks again. Because they have hdmi inputs and some seem to be able to up-scale and de-interlace, I assumed that they also had tuners. Coupled with that, a staff member in a certain well known tv retail outlet pointed out an input on an AV Receiver for a TV aerial connection - I now presume that this was an FM aerial input.

Your assumption is correct. I have met and dealt with some guys who work "on the floor" in the kind of shops you mention who are well-informed and able to explain stuff to customers but I have also seen and heard "explanations" that made my toes curl......... such as your experience. Awful.
