If I Ditched sky...what's the best thing to do?

On the back of SKY now looking for an extra .75c a month for people paying by credit card/debit card... I was wondering are there any stickies on here or do people have their own FTV set-ups?

Whats the best thing to do? Cable not available in area, so not an option.

Keep the old SKY dish or replace it with a slightly bigger one? What about the viewing cards?

Has anyone ditched SKY and set up a system to pick up channels using a different set-up?

I'm seriously thinking of cancelling sky, as its getting expensive enough, and was wondering if the nice people on here had any thoughts, links etc.

If there is already a forum or sticky then point me too it and close this thread.

    Cheers!

There's a sticky on the various satellite shops (online and bricks and mortar) up top.

I recently went the freesat road as I was a former disgruntled SKY customer, fed up with their endless repeats, lousy brainless programming and last but not least, the massive price dicrepancies between what their UK customers pay versus what they charge us in this fair land.

I got rid of the old SKY dish (it was a cheap piece of crap anyway) and bought a new larger dish, new cable, quad lnb and a freesat receiver from Satellite.ie. It was delivered yesterday morning and will be installed by yours truly soon. All in all, I reckon it will have paid for itself in 6 months when measured against what I was paying SKY.

I'll have plenty of channels and am sure I won't miss SKY one little bit. I'll get a HD freesat box in a few weeks when I make up my mind which one is best for me then I'll have BBC and ITV in HD as well.

In my mind, the only people who really need SKY are footie fans and those who think there's no alternative to getting the terrestrial channels, i.e. RTE, TV3 etc (there is - you can get them with an ariel and as DTT is being rolled out this year, you'll also have them in digital format as well).

You own the box and dish. It will receive all the free channels.

    Read the stickies.

You can even change it to the UK EPG. No card required.

You don't need to buy anything unless you dish is rusting to bits or you want a PVR version.
