UPC Ultra Slow Speeds

I just got UPC Ultra (20Mb) installed today and the download speeds are very slow.

    Wired

    410175576.png

    Wireless

I have tried re-setting the router, deleting the router settings and setting it up again. The results have all been close to the results shown. I'm not sure what else to try. Has anybody else had this issue after having UPC BB installed?

I have the exact same issue and they dont seem to care , even sent me a guy to fix it and he did not know anything about broadband . He told me himself .

Im in Balbriggan, where are you ? my speeds are nearly the exact same as yours..

Try the London server on speedtest.net.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 189 ✭✭Ourlad

Just around the corner from you in the grove. I'll ring them now and see if they tell me the same thing. When did they tell you to give it 5 -10 days?

You will never get 20 with UPC. I downgraded after 2 months to 10mg since i never ever ever received above 15 with them.

10 megs would be a dream come true ,, but sometime my speed drops to half a meg and im paying for 20 .. I was looking forward to some xbox live without all the lag .. :(

I'm just off the phone as well and told to leave it for 2 hours because the modem isnt registered on their system yet.

lol, you should have locked the engineer in your house* until he got it working properly or had him take it out again before he left. :D

*disclaimer: no, i'm not actually advertising kidnapping as a way of fixing your broadband.

My 20meg connection off UPC almost always gives me 20meg. I know a couple of other people who have UPC internet and they've exactly the same very positive experience with it.

Parts of their network can be overloaded, but they appear to be deploying extra capacity to any areas that need it going by reports from people who've posted on this board who previously had low bandwidth for weeks/months, only to have upc ring them to say it was sorted and for them to suddenly have full/close-to-full bandwidth available to them.

Maybe give them a buzz and see if you can come to some sort of agreement on discounts until the problem is fixed, perhaps? They're pretty open to applying service credits for sub-par performance in general.

This is all assuming that your physical cable connection is able to sustain a stable 20meg connection, of course.

you lot just want people to hate you don't you? :p

just to join the fray, here's me.

    411302759.png

    411303604.png

the highest i ever got was 18mbps, but only the once. it's hovering around 10-15mbps mostly and has gone as low as 5 at times.

neighbours in my area have been complaining about slow speeds and after a letter i got telling me that down and uploading 369gb in a month isn't their idea of 'fair use' it seems like it might be me, although it's been down to 5mbps on mine when i've not been downloading anything so it's not JUST me. :)

have been considering dropping to the 10mbps to have a tenner a month, I don't think I'd see any real world difference anyway most of the time.

don't want to miss out on the 100mbps upgrade at the end of the year tho. :) (fingers crossed)

The only thing i have to complain about in UPC is the upload speed with Torrents its a killer! Off heanet/usenet i download at a solid 2.3mb.

it's a very different picture now that everyone in my area is awake. :(

    411359792.png

    411360567.png

    not exactly the advertised 20mbps.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 286 ✭✭Blindpew

I find when using Rapidshare that I can get 25mb speed at any time of day or night. But what good is it when they'll terminate me if I go over 250gb in a month. You're lucky if your speed is slow.

Thats good to hear. The speeds have still been the same so hopefully when i ring them tomorrow i get some sort of deal until its sorted.

they're new with the 20mbps in my area and after blanket bombing us all with the "20mbps now available" propaganda i just think that demand has outstripped supply. I guess it's just a case of giving them some time to upgrade everything locally so it can cope a little better.

EDIT: just did another re-test. hmm, methinks they must try harder. :(

    411606147.png 411606899.png

EDIT EDIT: funny thing tho, just torrented something after posting those speeds and it maxxed out the 4'ish mbps available at the time, so I don't think they're throttling or shaping torrents, but maybe using a random port and encrypted transport helped avoid detection?

I live in Balbriggan and i am suppose to be getting a package for 77euro phone tv and broadband incl

do you think i will get the modem with it and would anybody reccomend it as i have seen in this topic there is a lot of complaints from my area

    thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,969 ✭✭✭christophicus

They give you a modem, and its pretty much the only modem you can use as its mac address is activated on their network for you ( or at least thats what I gathered from the engineer when they installed it for me ) . You are probably talking about a router though. I don't know if they give you a free router or not. And yes you can buy your own router if you want to .

    is that all they do?

there's plenty of firmwares out there that will allow you to clone the mac address. hmm, now that's got me thinking.

    hi all,

I'm thinking of going for the 10M:1M uncapped @Eur32/month.

Has anyone got feedback (good or bad) on UPC broadband in Limerick?

    regards,
    Dave

keep the faith coady, i'm sure they know there are problems and are working on it.

i suspect that their rapid increase in popularity from rolling out the 20mbps so widely is causing a bit of a backlog on upgrades, but they do seem to be getting there.

Let me get this straight, you're complaining about the speeds you're getting??? I'd be happy as a pig in **** if my UPC "ultra" connection was as good as that.

I have been very nice to UPC when i have called them. Think that may change today if i dont get the call back I was promised. Really fed up with there customer service. The last time they sent an engineer they sent a guy with no training . Looking at ther options today . the above speedtest is typical of the speed Im getting on a 20mb package , F*** this

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

make sure you keep a note of the times & dates of your speedtests for reference so you can point it out.

if it had been going on for a while and you don't have a decent speed at any time then you should have a case for getting your bill reduced at least until they can do something about it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 158 ✭✭coady

will do from now on vibe.. cheers for the advice

Spoke to them on Saturday, tech support advised that no one has even looked at the fault. He also informed me that it should have been repaired by the 16th of Feb. I'm trying my best to keep calm but they are screwing around. I will wait for a few more days .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

i've a speadsheet with the details of all my speedtests time/date up/down speed and ping etc. so i can look back at it if there are problems down the line and quote facts and figures as required.

can't make much fuss now though as i went 100gb over their 250gb FUP last month and am looking like i might break it slightly this month too although i might be able to squeeze in under it if i'm careful.

by my calculations i'll have to make 25gb last me till the end of the month (which to be fair is only 5 more days), but my calculations were 50gb out last time due to modem restarts missing some of the log entries, so hopefully i'll sneak in under the bar this time, but my logs could still be a way out.
