PowerPlay Golf Barretstown Serious Fun Weekend March 13th - 15th

Have you ever tried PowerPlay Golf? This weekend is the perfect chance to try it out of you haven't. It's a 9-hole format so obviously takes 1/2 the time of a normal round and it brings some much needed spice to the game with 2 flags on every green. This weekend is the chance to try it out and raise some money for a fantatsic charity.

Between Friday 13th and Sunday 15th March, 30 golf clubs across Ireland will be participating in a massive national fundraising event in aid of Barretstown.

The PowerPlay Golf Barretstown Serious Fun Weekend is a new initiative from the people behind the ‘two-flag game’ which aims to give Irish golfers the chance to try this 9-hole format on some of the best golf courses in the country and at the same time raise money to bring kids suffering from serious illness to Barretstown for some serious fun of their own.

The clubs supporting the event are offering excellent value and all are contributing €10 of their green fee to Barretstown. They include Carton House, Powerscourt, Rathsallagh, Druids Glen, Highfield, Roganstown, Dunmurry Springs, Castle Dargan, Galgorm Castle and many more

The weekend also marks the official start of the PowerPlay Golf Irish Rankings. At every event throughout the year, there are PowerPlay Golf Dollars up for grabs which gives players the chance to participate in an order of merit just like the professionals and also create your own leagues for friends, clubs or colleagues.

PowerPlay Golf is played over 9 holes and uniquely there are two flags on each green – one white, and one the black PowerPlay flag. Golfers must take three ‘PowerPlays’ in their first eight holes and score double Stableford points for net birdies or better.

They have an optional fourth ‘PowerPlay’ on the final hole, but face a two-point penalty for net bogey or worse, so decision-making plays a crucial role in the enjoyment of the game.

Played this last year in Castle Barna - we all loved it. Quick, exciting, cheaper then a normal round because its 9 holes. Good format if you like a little wager between firends as well because there are lots of twists and turns. Will pull some friends along who have been sceptics to show them just how good this is.

I'm surprised not too many people seem to have taken notice of this. In March it seems there will be a number of Irish clubs holding events including St Margret's, Powerscourt, Elm Green, South County, Carton House, Druids Glen, Knightsbrook, Rathsallagh and Dunmurry Springs.

When I initially looked at the site I thought it looked like a US/UK thing behing pushed over here that would never get off the ground but if all the above clubs get some of their members involved, with the online leaderboard etc it might be interesting to be a part of.

I think people haven't taken much notice yet because golfers are sceptical. I know I was - first instinct is that it sounds like a gimmick and it will never take off. But I think it could really take off in a huge way - and I think that because I've played it and it is fantastic. It really is.

It's not gimmicky - the rules have been developed with the R&A and its being suported by all of the big golfing bodies like The Golf Foundation, The European Tour, US PGA Tour, The PGA, etc. etc.

It will suit a lot of people because 4 1/2+ is a lot to commit to on a regular basis and it will allow people to play the golf more often (I can easily do 9 holes a week - but at the moment with work and kids am lucky to fit an 18 hole round once a month).

You're right too - the online rankings is a great idea - just like a fantasy league but you get to earn your points on the golf course.

This weekend for Barretstown is a perfect chance to try it out at one of these clubs.
