    Hey all,

Three of us are heading to Zell am See on Sat 21st for 7 days, staying in an apartment here: http://www.sbg.at/haus-unterberger/

Anyone with any tips / suggestions for things to do there other than hitting the slopes? Good bars / restaurants / etc?

I've found an equipment rental place where I can reserve a board and boots for €103 for the week, cheaper than any other only options. Think I could do better just turning up and hitting one of the smaller rental places, or should I lock in the good deal?

    Thanks :)

Make sure to pay the small surcharge and buy the Salzburg area skipass that is valid for nearby Saalbach-Hinterglemm, it's WELL worth it.
Great public sauna, plunge pools etc at the swimming pool, you can buy a "book" of tickets quite cheap which can be used by multiple users.
Kupferkessel restaurant, good food and value. Give the Chinese a miss.

Just to note there - you can't ski to Saalbach, you have to get a bus. It's about 20km away by road.

There are some good deals on rental but from looking round that price seems to be the best. It is peak season so I would book online to be sure of having the gear.

There are quite a few good Italians restaurants and the trad Austrian food ones in Zell and there is always the Crazy Daisy for a good night out!!

Quite a few other bars and clubs but cant remember the names of them!!

You will have a great time! Zell is lovely.

Might see ya on the slopes or in the pubs so! :)

Turns out our accom is a few miles from the centre of Zell Am See - it looks dead centre between Zell Am See and Kaprun actually. Hopefully this will make it handy to hit all the slopes around, though will mean we'll need taxis back every night.

Should we buy our ski-passes before going over there? I notice that a 'flexible' pass, valid for 5 days in any 7 day period, is available online for €187, is this a fair price?

Who are you buying them from online? Check out the Zell am See/Kaprun website as they'll have prices on there too. 187 sounds ok - day passes are up around 40€ this year in Austria.

I have to echo whats already been said. Crazy Daisy is good fun for apres ski. It doesn't tend to kick off until about 7 though. There is great value good food also downstairs which I only found out about this year. Even free wireless for those with portable PDAs and the like.

Delia (straight up the road from Crazy Daisy) is good fun if you go there when its busy and not a Saturday night. Was there last Saturday and the Polizei were in checking ids of Austrian kids as the place was very young. Other days I have found the average age to be about mid twenties and great fun.

Also if you are good at getting down the mountain in one piece may I recommend the Hans-Schnapps bar at the top of Schmittenhoe. It is great craic especially on a sunny day when Hans is pumping out the cheesy Austrian music and everyone is dancing on the bar. The final cable car goes down the mountain at 5 so thats when the people not willing to ski home can head down. The bar closes soon enough after that and after you leave a ski patrol will be sent down every slope to make sure everyone makes it home.

Also if you want to watch any live Irish soccer or rugby matches O'Flanagans is the only place we found which has the channels and shows the matches.

Don't know if it's too late for you at this stage but don't expect much in the way of nightlife, Zell Am See is a pretty tame resort party-wise - the aprés ski isn't bad but it closes early... Great skiing though, did my first black runs there and loved the place :)

Really?!! Damn, I was told the aprés ski was great, so I assumed the party didn't stop :( We're going to be looking for snow bunnies each night - would it be on a par with Livigno for nightlife (was there a few years ago and it was good for that I thought).
