Peugeot 206 starter motor issues?

Quick question. The SOH's Peugeot 206 (1999) had been sitting in the drive the last few days as she hasn't been using it recently. I tried it the other evening to make sure everything was ok and it had a bit of trouble starting - it was a bit of an effort getting it started. Didn't turn over very well but started eventually and then was fine.
This evening, didn;t start at all the first time, just a hum. Then tried it again and started ok. Stopped it, turned it off and then tried to restart it and absolutely nothing. All the display lights come on and then eventually I can hear a hum as the fan comes on but no joy with the engine.

I'm guessing it's the starting sequence but what exactly? Also, we'll be changing the car in the next couple of months but how much could]/i] this cost to fix? Could it be some poor connections? Solenoid need to be replaced etc?
It's quite a vague question but any help is greatly appreciated. :)

It sounds like the starter motor is spinning but not engaging the bendix drive. I'm no expert on 206s so I don't know if the bendix is driven by the solenoid, but on some starters it is extended by centrifugal force and if the shaft is dirty it sticks and won't engage. The solution is to take off the starter motor and clean the shaft (but don't be tempted to oil it).

    Thanks a million!
Armed with this info we shall be ringing the Hibernian home rescue lads. We were afraid it could have been something serious (it's a Peugeot after all).

Fingers crossed it can be fixed cheaply and easily.
