    Hi

im going to buy a scanner but have'nt a clue about them, I want to spend as
little as possible cause i will probably get sick of it quickly.

I cant post a picture to it because boards dont allow links ebay etc,
    i think?

Heres what the listing says about it, Omega high sensitivity mutli-band radio receiver covering the FM Air Marine TV1 and CB bands, suitable for receiving
    FM surveillence devices. (Aircraft band 110 - 136mhz/ Pb(Police Band) / Marine Band 137 - 175 mhz/Citizen band channel 1 -80/ Tv1 54-87 mhz
Fm 88-108 mhz) its real cheap at £16.99. i suppose you get what you pay for but could i pick up all bands with this? especially garda?

or am i wasting money? should i just go straight to digial, if so what should i look for? I was looking at a cheap digital one on ebay (£40) heres what it says. "Bug \ Phone \ Wireless Camera digital detector scanner" "Detects RF wireless signals between 1MHz and 2.6GHz
    - Works for detecting cell phones, walkie talkie, surveillance/hidden/pinhole cameras, bugs and other signal transmitting devices" thats all it said. with that frequencey range i'd pick up all bands.

    Cheers

    No:
    It's not a scanner
    It doesn't do many bands.

It's really just a modified FM radio. These are sometimes in Euro/Bargain shops too.

No scanner does all bands, assuming you regard 10KHz to 250GHz as the radio spectrum.

Basic Scanners do VHF/UHF only, FM and AM from 25MHz to around 900MHz (About €120 to €300)

Better ones add SSB (USB/LSB, CW) and NBFM and 0.1MHz (100kHz) to about 1.3GHz (1300MHz). (About €250 for handheld to €8,000 for professional)

The £40 gadget is not a scanner for listening to radio, it's simply a near field detector with no tuning to give an indication if there is a low power transmitter (bug, WiFi etc) in the same room. Professional bugs using "spread spectrum" won't be detected by it, nor remote operated GSM or phone-line infinity bugs.

Getting a scanner for the express purpose of listening to Garda is illegal (see the Charter).

    Welcome to the Forum :)

Read also the "Getting started" and feel free to ask more questions.

if you put in front of image link and after it (with no spaces), an image will be inline.
If it's large just put the link.

Established posters can put links to commercial items. For low post count people there is the risk that Mods might think you are a Shill or Spammer.

However in this case I'm perfectly familiar with both of those "toy" products. :D

    Watty cheers for the reply,

I knew that scanner was to good to be true.
about the detector, the seller got back to me
telling me what you just said. which is not what i want.

I was not looking for a scanner specfically to listen to garda,
it would be nice to have it but im not going to spend €200 which was the
quote i got from the yellow shop on the quays, to be able to listen to them.
Anyway I thought i was legal as long you dont use the info or pass it on to somebody.

is there any shops in dublin that do second hand scanners? all i want to spend is about €50, i know its nothing but i dont want one enough to spend more.

this might be of some interest to you's http://cgi.ebay.ie/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=280311878537

ebay is your best bet, a Uniden / Bearcat / Gre or possibly
    This sunday here
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055487960

The one in your link will go too expensive for you.

Scanners from USA are usually blocked (as that one is) on a band that has licence free gear here. (864MHz .. 870Mhz)

European or Hong/China better than USA. Also USA shipping is high.

It's legal if you inadvertently listen to Garda and then tell no-one.
