As the title says, I sold my old car last May and it was taxed for one year since last March. Anyway, the tax renewal came in the post to me today. Conclusion- the bonehead didn't bother his arse sending off the reg cert.

I know there will be some who will tell me that the buyer should do this and the seller should never do this and that and blah blah blah- There is no right answer so I apply different logic in each case depending on how much resistance I'll get from the character in question. It was only for €1,500 and the buyer paid cash so I said fair enough, take it away and post it.

I remember his name but I don't have his number any more. I had him give me his postal address but that's long lost. I haven't had any trouble as a result but I wouldn't mind sorting this properly...

If it was me I would contact Shannon and get a replacement cert, then put down the new owner of the car as...
    Mr Ignoramous
    123 Tool Road,
    Toolville
    Tool.

That way the car has no proper owner and will find itself seized at the next roadblock when it can't be taxed or NCT'd.

By the way as the seller you are 100% responsible for sending the cert off when you sell a car, buyer has no responsibility to. You may also get penalty points and toll bills as you are still the registered owner.

I've heard of it happening before.
I don't think it necessarly means it's still registered to you.
Your local tax office mighn't be informed of the change of ownership.
Best to ring them and explain the situation.
If that fails, contact the department in Shannon.

While it's a bit late for the OP, it's worth noting that if you sell your car (privately) YOU should send the change of ownership details to Shannon and NEVER leave it up to the buyer.

I think I posted here not so long ago about my brother who left the seller send it and he didn't bother his arse either. He had the no-tax-displayed fines to prove it.

No win situation- this was the debate I wanted to avoid...

Check www.motortax.ie and type the reg. Will tell you if the ownership was changed in the last 3 months. I hope you don't get any speeding fines, you can't prove you sold it six months ago because no dates were signed.

The seller should be sending off the VRC, not the buyer.

The buyer should not even be given the old VRC at all. They will be issued a new one from the DOE in Shannon once their system is updated with the new owner's details.

Not really - if they query the transfer date, no doubt you'll have his full details to confirm...........

....which ultimately means it's all down to you. I lost his address/forget his name/ etc doesn't wash. RTFM, as they say.

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
