Music Income Poll

As there's been some talk in the last few days about jobs etc. lets try and put some figures on what guys actually make out of music.

That is 'Take Home' as opposed to turnover or profit. What's your annual salary directly out of music either part or full time.

Perhaps we should exclude covers gigging? It probably doesn't directly attract recording , however if you're gigging the music you're recording include that.

It's a secret poll, not even mods can see who votes what ... also I have a feeling that the taxman would have no interest in these figures.

The real trick is to get into the millions!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,413 ✭✭✭frobisher

On balance it costs me money and will do for a while yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,472 ✭✭✭Rockshamrover

Assuming the votes cast so far are genuine, there are only 11 people making a living from music on Boards. That's pretty sad.:(

Unfortunately I am not and probably never will make money from music (that's cos your crap or just ahead of your time).

It would be nice to get more votes in.

No-one, including the Mods has access to Voters ID so you're safe to vote without fear.

Costing me money all the time, well I just a student at the minute!
Also losing a bit on the gigging front too :(

Depressingly this thread reminds me of that crap joke - How do you make a million from music? Start with 2 million

I do very little home recording - but guitar wise I say I've spent close to 10k in the last 9 years ( I worked p/t in a guitar shop for 2 years where I spent more then I made)

at least if things go totally tits up; most of the bigger things I have are selling on ebay and in shops for a lot more then I picked them up for

I reckon that half the people who said they make money out of music, either lied or don't make as much as they claimed. Considering it's an anonymous poll, how sad it is that they need to convince themselves of it?

Based on what evidence Big? You'll also notice most people claim NOT to make any significant money. 24 of the 42 either spend money or make less than 3k.

Oh, sorry - I didn't realise I needed evidence to make a statement.
Based on the fact that most people lie on the internet to make themselves out to be bigshots.
Of the 9 people who claim to make 50k+, I'd say 5 or 6 actually do. It's my opinion.

Of course you're very welcome to make any statement once it's within the charter rules.

I'm wondering can you supply any evidence to back up that statement?

How do you know the 'fact that most people lie on the internet'?

    Do you lie?

I wonder is he working for the Inland Revenue and is trying to get those people who said they earn +€50k to reveal themselves.

use your head here son.. firstly a full time gigging musician in a covers band doing weddings etc would easily be making close to 50k if booked week in week out.

people who own or manage the music shops around town could be making that money.

there are quite a few extremely talented engineers in this city who would be taking home that kinda money, i personally know 1 who falls into the top category.

there are some very talented session musicians taking home that kind of money.

so who's to say the 9 arent any of the above?

I did request that gigging in covers bands was not included in above figures.

Not in this poll - it's related to recording or gigging the music you've created.

As you say, if we were to include every wedding band muso they'd all be over 50k.

Music shops & wedding bands & sound engineers & cover bands don't count - read the poll description before you get on my case.
Looks like a few people may have misunderstood the poll and voted wrong - thus proving my point. Thanks for that.

Well, except techno, as it just involves robbing other people beats, bass lines, riffs, grooves, and cool voice snippets from movies.

Big, I can see you're very keen to 'prove' your point against Damaged Trax but will you acknowledge that there is no mention of either Music Shops or Sound Engineers ?

If you make general claims without any evidence to back them up (and in your case fabricated 'evidence' ) expect to get smacked down around here.

    That's as it should be.

Is this, or this this to YOUR quote about your poll:
it's related to recording or gigging the music you've created

Working in a music shop, or working as a sound engineer is NOT "recording or gigging the music you've created". Am I correct??

Big , you're trying to defend your position by taking things out of context.

    Neither big nor clever.

Can you answer my question, please:
Is working in a music shop, or working as a sound engineer classified as "recording or gigging the music you've created"? Yes or NO.

If the answer is NO, then some people, including DamagedTrax, didn't understand that when they voted, hence the answers are flawed, as I first suggested.

There is no mention of Music Shops or Sound Engineers. But it's logically excluded based on "recording or gigging the music you've created".

ah yes. the fastest way to prove your ignorance is with a statement like that.

and as ill always say, show me your discogs and ill show you mine.

as far as the poll goes who really gives a crap about how accurate it is? is it really such an important aspect of your life that you're still talkin bout it?

Yes - my point is proven by the fact that DamagedTrax (as one example) completely misread the poll, and included wedding bands, music shop clerks, sound engineers, etc, in his reply to me.
How do you know the 'fact that most people lie on the internet'?
lol - are you the most naive person on the internet?
    Do you lie?
    I exaggerate & joke, yes.

Eh, you & PaulBrewer have been arguing with me about it for 2 pages now, so I'd say you guys do!
is it really such an important aspect of your life that you're still talkin bout it?
What makes you think it's an important aspect of my life? The fact that I replied 6 times on a forum? Same applies to you in that case.

    One example doesn't prove anything.
By your own admission you lie on the internet.

    Lets leave it at that.

All useful info that can been gleaned from this thread has been.
