My car insurance is due up next month.
I have a VW Jetta with 170bhp so it could be loaded a bit because it's a bit pokey.

I'm about to give a day trawling the web and making phone-calls for quotes.
Has anyone any advice as to who is competitive these days?

    Thanks,
    John.

Take out the Golden Pages and ring everyone, it's the only way to get the best quote.

and anyone else you can think of. Always ask them to do a bit better when they do quote you, there is always room for negotiation.

McCarthy Insurance in Fermoy saved me about 300 squid on my renewal from Quinn. Policy was Hibernian fully comp from them.

I just renewed my insurance during the week. Honestly most companys should be burned with the quotes I was getting. For example Hibernian and FBD were both over 1200 for third party fire and theft which is a complete joke. I'm 24, male, 4 years no claims and fill license 6 years. Quinn were a bit better at 860 tpf&t but still a joke. I then tried 123.ie after reading about it here they gave a decent quote of around 810 for fully comp.

Then finally I tried Axa who I thought would have been expensive but man was I surprised. 640euro fully comp:eek: with interest free repayments for the year and they were great to deal with on the phone I have to say.

The moral of the story is shop around, still though some places are taking the piss almost 1000 euro between Axa for fully comp and hibernian for 3rd party and its not like im 17 on a provisional license.

I'm a 23 year old girl, full license since I was 19, the most expensive quote I got was from Axa (1200) and I ended up going with hibernian for less than 600!! However, that was through a broker, the online quote I got from hibernian was 900 (I would have thought online would be cheaper, but not in this case. Just goes to show that you really do need to shop around, just because one person gets a great quote from a particular insurer doesn't mean it'll be cheap for everyone else.

Be sure to check what exactly is covered, things such as windscreen cover, breakdown assistance, NCD protection, etc. Decide what you think is necessary or not. Also check excess payment.

    +1 AXA

My Quinn-Direct renewal was €1185 for TPFT

123.ie quoted me €638 for TPFT

Guess who I went with :pac:

I renewed with AA insurance at the end of December. They quoted me €508 fully comp on a BMW 320i. I shopped around and the only one that came near was Travellers at €510 (I think). I told AA I had a better quote and they came back with €409. I would definitely recommend them-I havent found anyone cheaper.

That kind of sums it up, insurance is a crap shoot and you have to wonder if they pull these quotes out of a hat.

Check the small print though. I got offered a great quote by them last year. Then I double checked the policy form that I was sent out and one of the conditions was that I was a tee totaller  Once I rang them up to say that wasn't the case, the quote was in the same ballpark as other quotes I was getting.

Try bestquote.ie . I think it's a website for several different brokers I got fully comp for €305. I think i paid €650 last year with Axa having been with them for 5 years claim free and the renewal quote this year was €815. I would have always went with Axa too even if a bit more expensive as they do have a good policy. However, my premium each year seemed to always increase, and they come down after a bit of haggling. This year i decided against going with them as the best they would do was €615 and basically the guy in Axa said there was no way they could match the quote . The policy I'm getting is with Royal Sun and Alliance but has better benefits than the Axa (NCB is protected, driving of other cars is covered fully comprehensive). I can give number of broker if someone wants to pm me.

Interesting, I will have a look at the policy when I get it I hope they have not done something like that or I will not be one bit happy.

How exactly do they prove if person drinks or does not I wonder?

People often just look at the bottom line when it comes to buying insurance, instead of looking at what exactly it is that they're actually buying.

Insurance companies are very willing to take money from you, but not so keen on settling claims, and that's when the small print comes into play.

    Caveat emptor!

Be careful - cheapest isn't always best. One way of reducing the premium is to increase your excess if you are willing to pay a bit more yourself in the event of an accident.
