DLRCOCO have commissioned an examination of the junction, due to the persistant traffic problems and crashes here

is there a big redesign on the cards I wonder??/

big redesign? I doubt it - extra lane southbound as far as the Bray-South exit is whats needed. Not sure if the existing overbridges can accomodate this though...

Luas B2 is due to run along the coast side of the M11 as it heads towards Bray. Perhaps the extra lane could be provided as part of these works.

I dont think there is much room to change the design of the road compared to what is there at the moment.

The problem is the M11 traffic, after leaving the Loughlinstown roundabout build up speed only to slow down rapidly when the roads merge.

Picture 4 lanes, 2 on the right going 10-20kmh.
The two lanes on the left tend to be going faster (80 - 100+kph)
Slow moving cars on the right try to move over to the left
Quicker cars on the left try to merge onto the right
..... all in the same place.

In terms of safety perhaps slowing down the m11 traffic to match the m50
traffic (which can crawl at peak hours)??

4 lanes into 2 - delays are inevitable.

there is a wide median on the M11 and space on either side at least as far as fassaroe so there is some scope for widening. From there up to the Kilcroney junction though is the old road - there's houses, a halting site and a church right beside the road (though I think there's still scope for narrowing the median). Its only the southbound carriageway that urgently needs widening.

Examination or not, it wont be funded anytime soon

As someone above said, the problem is people merging from Loughlinstown coming down too quickly. I think the angle of the shorter merge lane on the right is too sharp, traffic coming from the M50 often doesn't see those trying to merge until late and that's what causes the accidents.

What is the problem the Road was widened to three lanes each way from the M50 junction to the bray Exit was it not:confused:

What is the design problem to, I'm not familar with the new layout only from what I seen on Google earth.

I believe that the M50 is only being improved (widened to three lanes) from the Sandymount junction north.

DLRCOCO are proposing to reduce the speed limit on the M11 from its junction with the M50 to the county boundary, just south of the Bray exit. The proposal is to drop it to 100 km/h.

thats only a short stretch (the 3rd lane become the slip for the Bray-North exit). Its then narrows to 2 lanes and thats where the traffic backs up from. If you have 2 2-lane roads merging into just 2 lanes over a short distance, there is inevitably going to be congestion at busy times.
