    hi,

I have a late 05 320d coupe. I'm finding it alittle sluggish in low gears when taking off. im wondering if remapping will give me any worthwhile gains? is there potential of messing up the engine by doing this?

I'm just looking for peoples opinions on this. I'm not well up on the remapping idea. It has plenty of poke when i get moving, its just off the line its sluggish.

Diesel, not that great off the line... you'll catch up a fairly quick though, thru the gears the 320d is quite fast. Remapping wont help you at the lights, but will give an extra bit in third, fourth etc..if you really need it.

cheers, yeah im happy as i go up the gears, just wouldnt mind the bit of extra pump off the line. i mean im not looking to wiz around at 150 mph...just get away faster. suppose you dont buy a 320d for the acceleration!

    think a 320d goes from around 156 to 195-205?

    edit: and bucketloads of torque

What are the downsides though if any? Warranty? Engine life? I have a Focus 2.0TDCi and may be tempted.

does it put extra strain/load on the engine? would i be looking at a shorter life span for the turbo or anything i should know about ?

It will put strain on your clutch first and foremost

it just brings the engine upto its full capacity.. cars like the 320d are "downgraded" for emissions etc.

i've read into alot on a bmw forum and it has no negative effects on engine unless ur bombing it all the time i guess..

biggest downside imo is having to declare it for insurance

ah yes the insurance, never thought of that... i hear remapping is untraceable... not sure how true this is...not that im saying its right not to declare it :D

i always figured (plan on 320d after summer09) that if it ever happened that i caused a crash and that was at risk of voiding the insurance, i'd be able to say that it must have came like that 2nd hand and i wasn't aware of it..

i've no idea to be honest and never thought about it properly but it'd be handy if you didn't have to declare

I got my Passat 130 tdi remapped a lil while ago. It's defintely worth it!

I understand exactly what the OP is talking about regarding the slow take off. But I'm not sure if it is that slow. I find after driving petrols that the feeling of revs shooting up really quickly in first and second gear is odd so I tend to not let the revs move up so fast, which then means everyone on front of me is 15 meters ahead of me.

So maybe try get used to the idea of letting the diesel engine rev up quickly while avoiding wheel spine in 1st and 2nd gear.

I'm still trying to get used to the right amount of accelleration in 1st and 2nd because sometimes it's too slow or my wheels try to spin (ESP usually stops them).

Check out this website for remapping --> http://www.chippedire.com/

    BMW E46 320d 150 Stock Remapped »
Power (hp) 150 hp to 183 hp

I haven't used these guys myself but i know a friend who has on 2 previous cars with successful results.

    OP ~
What exact model E46 320cd do you have?
    I was looking at a 2005 E46 320cd myself, would you recommend?

i have the SE model. i love it. nice drive and handling, feels very firm on the roads. i have some extras like leather seats, bluetooth.. parking sensors and climate control are standard i think. it has a nice spec but not as flashy as the mpack model. i bought it in the UK, hard to ignore the savings over there.

is an increase in 33BHP noticeable?
