2nd hand Octavia or Golf - any views?

Have €5k to spend on a second hand car and was looking at either a Golf or Octavia. Any views?

I'm replacing my 99 Alfa 156 that's on its last legs, NCT is out two years now and it has no hope of getting a new one any time soon as I'm reliably informed that the emissions unit is shot. What's the chances of a being offered something for it on a trade in? Or should I just consign to the scrapyard?

    You'd buy a lot of a Skoda for €5K

To shift your Alfa, it may be worth posting it up on http://www.alfaowner.com/ . I'm sure you'll get some enthusiast to give you something for it rather than being change to go to a breakers yard.

I have a mk4 diesel golf for a year and a half now and has never gvien me a days trouble. Just as long as you service it when its due it'll serve you for a very long time.

Some things that need to be replaced on the golf's can be tricky/expensive to do. For instance I had to get the rear axel bushings replaced for the NCT as they were practically hanging out of it. I though it was a job I could do myself but it turned out to be a tricky job to do so I left it to the local mechanic and he said he even had a bit of trouble trying to get out the old bushing and pressing in the new ones. (at a cost of €200 to do the job)
Bushings only need to be replaced every 100k or so anyway.

Just to bear that in mind other than that their a great car, although Skoda do the same thing for less, if your not worried about the badge!

I think many people may feel now a days that the Skoda badge is the quality badge of the VAG group. :D

If your own car is seriously shot, you'd be offered SFA for it so buy straight cash and get a discount. If you can get someone to take the Alfa off your hands thats a bonus. I'd go with the Octavia...sure the boot is massive:D

I think you will get alot more car in an Octavia than a Golf for €5k.

Thanks for that. So no major alarm bells with the Skoda then? They're not renowned for anything particularly bad? Couldn't care less about the badge. Just heard that they were a decent car for the money.

Its based on the Golf so you are getting the same car underneath with a more useful body. Skoda tend to do much better in owner satisfaction surveys than VW
