Is it possible to ask the dole office if you can sign on the day before the signing date? I will be leaving the county early on the signing day and wont be back for 10 days. If not, is it possible to postpone the signing for the week after or get someone to sign on my behalf?

They're reluctant to change it. My next signing-on day on a day I have exams. I asked could I change it, she said no. Then she asked why. I told her and she said I could change it to the day after, but that I needed to bring written proof of my exam date.

    Certainly plead your case...

If you're not available & actively seeking work during those 10 days, you need to declare it to the SWO.

You are allowed to skip one signing on day every year, bascially you are allowed a 2 week holiday while on the dole, just tell them your going away and you wont have to sign on that month.

Do they ask you why you wont be signing, or where you will be?

On no account can you sign on early. If you can't make your signing day, you will have to sign on at the next earliest day that you can. You may be asked to provide evidence of why you couldn't make your signing day, and could be asked to produce evidence eg Hospital appointment letter, job interview letter etc.

You are entitled to 12 days holidays per year, so if you are leaving the country or area and unable to sign, you should apply in advance (at least two weeks) for holidays. Then you are exempted from signing that day, and your payment will be held for you until you return.

If you are late on more than 3 occasions, you could be put on daily signing.

If you are involved in any sort of studies that involve exams, you should declare this to Social Welfare. You could be exempted from signing on during exam times - that is if you are on the right scheme ( Back to Education Allowance or Part time Education Allowance.)
