Im sure some of ye have been in Australia for a long period. Im currently considering doing the 6-12 months thing down there.

    What are the casinos like?

Most importantly do any of ye have any experience of internet poker down there. How hard is it to get broadband short term or do they have anything like mobile broadband that we have here?

Is i poker allowed there , its just i remember reading a thread on 2+2 about PPP not been allowed there?

    poker in oz lets see.

in sydney main casino is star casino any day of the week there is cash games there at 3 in the afternoon you will find 5-6 tables at least. Tournments there offer large prize pools but have poor structues.

other than casinos there are poker domes which offer better structures worse players but generally dont have dealers which is very annoying to say the least

If you fancy a lighter game the pub tournis are fun usually small buy ins of not free and then prizes aint great but often include tickets to larger tournis were the standard is poor and the prizes can be good.

online u can get mobile broadband for bout 15euro a month and ipoker works there i was playing gutshot over there.

    did i miss anything?

Thanks , just wondering did you have much experience of using the mobile broadband ? What was it like as i know the mobile broadband here wouldnt be ideal for poker?

if you search there was a similar thread not so long ago, i put some info in it but can only vaguely remeber the info now, anyway i used a thing called unwired it was 150$(this is roughly) initially and then 90$ a month for the second best package they offer, its a plug in with no contract or any of that lark no phoneline either, i could play on stars with little or no trouble(i dont mutli table), i was based in sydney so connection was good wouldnt imagine itd be any use outside of sydney. Hope this helps?

Star city isnt isnt bad for poker although rake is high its somethin like 5bucks a half hr and then 10percent of pot up to x amount cant remember how much its capped at. Its really soft despite the rake and it has a fixed buy in depending on the stakes,1/2 is 80 bucks i think!!!

not really sure after this, theres a place in bondi or cogee that runs sit and gos most night but supposed to be crapshooty ive never played them or anything i just heard this from mates.

Any other particular questions? i may be able to answer just ask

I used big pond. My normal bill was 89.95 dollars a month except for one month where it was 400 dollars cause i downloaded the wsop:rolleyes:.

    http://my.bigpond.com/internetplans/broadband/wireless/plansandoffers/default.jsp

Connection is generally good and the best thing is you can use it anywhere you go. Basically i went in to the shop showed my passport and set the direct debit to come from my credit card. Alot of the other ones you need an Australian passport.

Live poker in the casino is nothing short of a joke rake wise. I found the standard ok except in perth where it was bad. The crown have a few decent tourneys every now and then. (ie deep stacked ones) I played a decent game in a pokerdome once but it was self deal so i didnt go back.

There's TONS of poker in Australia, but most of it is self-dealt pub games. For a friendly game, I'd recommend the AB Hotel in Glebe, Sydney. Tell them I sent you. If you want dealers, you gotta go to Star City.

    Thats the PokerDome. Shudder.

I was living in some grim hostel in Cogee with some nutjob Japanesse fellow and some infrutiangly nice Canadians.Obviously I had no loot.
We used to steal food from the communal kitchen then head down to the beach at 7 am to dodge paying the days rent. The PokerDome had a freerole on at 4 and everyday I would head up to play to keep me busy until it was safe to return to the hostel. Good lord it was horrific. I fooking hate Aussies as a direct result.

The games in Star were amazing-despite the rake. The higher you can play the better-caught a sweet heater there and ran up 8k or so in a few weeks.
I played loads in Perth, again great games but tough rake.
Rudest poker staff Ive ever encountered though.

Pub games should be avoided like the plague.

What is the standard of a 5-10 game in sydney ? With the state of the Aus dollar against the euro you would have to play this high to get close to a good 1-2 game around here. I couldnt see myself playing a 1-2 capped buyin of 80 game.

Realistically i wouldnt see myself playing much live there but i guess if its real soft you couldnt really turn it down.

Would any of ye recommend the experience in general ( non poker). Im in 2 minds as to whether to make the plunge and go.

Out of this world bad from my limited experience (maybe 5-6 full sessions at 5-10). When I was there the game was pretty freaky with a big crew of Asians who basically didnt play poker but wanted to gamble,so might not be always as good or play as wild.
Halfbaked played a good pot with one which Im sure he enjoyed.
I guess you would need a little bit of money to play this and would just take a shot with what you dont mind losing.
The next game down either 5-5 or 2-5 cant remember was very good aswell and defo some money there.
I can think of a lot of places Id rather go than Australia but it was some of my freinds favourite place. Different strokes.

For short term prepaid internet, Telstra 3G is the most stable. $150 for the usb dongle, and $100 gets you 6GB of data (downloading AND uploading contributes to this which sucks).

The USB dongle is complete crap and i got disconnected a few times while playing. I was about to invest in the Wireless Gateway (router / modem combo for the 3g + $600aus) which doesnt seem to get the disconnects associated with the dongle... but i moved to another apartment and have proper broadband at this place.

There's a Pokerdome in Bondi now?

When I was there 2 years ago it was in Newtown, next to Redfern. It was class at that time anyway. check it out - right beside the Newtown train station.

HELLZ YEAH! It was an amazing experience and I had a bloody good time.

The Newtown Pokerdome is closed now AFAIK. I lived right beside Star City and played live most days, the rake is beatable (over the 7 months I played there) and the players are absolutely terrible. The Unwired 'broadband' is crap IMHO. Sydney is amazing, with the weak Australian dollar anyone with a bit of Euro-land cash could be living ghetto fabulous for a few months! Then back to the Irish recession, ugh...

That's a shame, they were the shining light of poker in Sydney for a very long time. I guess it wasn't sustainable long-term.

newtown id defo closed there are a few others look up there site there is a 200 saturday game in hurtsville that is very beatable and 10k gtd.

    i would second this post.

in terms of live games i only played in the casino in brisbane and in the crown in melbourne. both very soft games. in brisbane however they deal the cards out of a shoo like they use in blackjack, i found this very annoying and it slowed the game alot. easily brisbane was the slowest game i have ever come across in a casino, tiltingly slow i found. also the TD's etc in general were of a very poor standard i found. the average player in ireland knows alot more about the game than these guys. this is mainly down to nlhe only being in this cass for less than a year now..

the crown is a very good place to play poker i find. lots of games available all through out the day. you may need to wait for your more acquired tastes such as 2-5 plo or higher but on tuesdays they have 5-10, 10-20, 25-50 plo i believe, never played these...rake is $5 per person per hour plus a 5% rake capped at $6 i think on the 2/3 game. do not play the 1/2 game, worst value ever, wont even get into it...2-5 and above is fine.

OP you said you were thining about doint the year thing, my advice is do it!! just do it, you will not regret it..

I was in the Crown last night and I was told by a worker at the cash counter that the rake on the 2/3 game is 10% capped at $6, in addition to the table charge. Tear tear.

i poker is not allowed down there. well i tried paddy power and its not allowed so id say i poker is not allowed. b2b is. the poker is sydney is pretty ****. the star casino, they dont have a clue of the rules of the game and the poker is pretty poor.dont get me started on the rake.. 5dollar time charge every hour plus 10% of the pot, capped at 8 dollars.. same on the higher tables which is stupid.. easy tables though.. u can play in poker domes and all that but its mostly self dealth so that sucks too.. so if ur thinking of making a carrer of it in sydney i wudnt waste ur time....:)

ipoker sure is allowed; dunno why but some skins don't allow you to play from within aus. I play on GJP with no problems

Online poker is illegal in Australia. I used Bet365 at the time and it worked fine.

what u mean they dont have a clue of the rules?i thought they were pretty clued in myself, rake is tough but its known before you sit down i dont see the problem?i couldnt install pp either when i was there for some reason cant remember why now, actually it could of been pp casino now that i think about it. Pokerstars was fine for me there and the timing suited the games i played...

I've been playing on B2B with no problems

Signed up for '3' broadband which is around $29.95 per month, depends on how much you download though... Telstra is better if you are straying outside the cities, but is MUCH more expensive

Sitting on the balcony with a beer atm... hows Ireland lads? :D

I was there a couple months ago, and I found star city to be a crapshoot most nights, in fact it was so much of a crap shoot, I started playing craps lol, but the crown was worse again, never got down to melbourne, and as for the general experience, couldnt get into it, enjoyed surfing and that, but the nightlife was no good as everybody seemed to be on something, and unfortunately my drug of choice is exclusively liquor, but who knows, your experience could be different
