    Hi there,

A friend of a friend has designed and organised hosting of a new site for me... basic enough, no programming, just html and some php. How much should i pay them per hour for their work?

    Many thanks!

Better off agreeing on a fixed cost prior to him starting work on it. That way there's no surprises, and if he goes over the time estimated to complete, it's his problem.

Agreed you give him the spec, he estimates his time and gives you a cost. He goes over the time your not hit with a increase, he does it quicker you still pay the same but get the site sooner.

But if you change anything on the agreed spec then you will be faced with an increase as the changes would not be covered in the orginal quote.

Thanks y'all but say an average website with the 'contact us', 'about us' standard 6 or 8 pages, basic design.. are we talking 2K cost for that on average or about 300?

Sorry i'm useless with this stuff and you're right i should have agreed this before it was finished!

    Thanks again.

    .

if it's just a brocher site it would be handy to knock together, i'd say anything between €200 and €500, for 2k i'd be looking for something special...

if it's the €200-€300 mark expect something amateurish. 2k is a lot if there's no programming (though PHP is programming!)

For 200 to 300 you'd probably be looking at a template site. 6 to 8 pages I dunno but 2k sounds like a lot.

you could probably get a good job done by a freelancer on rentacoder.com for about 50 quid

Been asked to do a nixer like this myself recently enough. The best way is to ask him from the outset how long it would take him to do it.

A brochure-ware site up to 8 pages expect up to €400. Anything more and it's a little stiff.

If you've asked him to design it himself and come up with a template ask him about this. Templates can be time intensive at the best of times...so try to agree a fixed price for this.

Agree a rate to create the static pages for you. 20 minutes per page is quite generous.

Agree also on hosting and maintenance costs. They should be in line with what you paid to get the site up and running in the first place.

    Post Go-Live

Ask him what his rate to fix bugs/make ammendments to it and agree to this. Ask him for timesheets if it makes life easier.
