trying to send email thro' outlook using vodavone broadband dongle

i've a desktop pc running win xp pro, sp3.....

all i want to do is use my xxx@eircom.net email address thro' outlook 2003 (both of which I've been using for years) but instead of using the old wired ethernet I'm now using my new vodafone mobile broadband dongle & despite changing the smtp server settings to various different vodafone ones I cannot send mail, receive yes, send no...

I've tried with & without authentication, spa, you name it i've tried it at this stage...

early errors were showing this:
Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients
Subject: test
send: date/time
the following recipients could not be reached:
'xxxx@xxxxx.ie' on date/time
451 http://www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?ip=(ip address)

which vodafone say is only to do with eircom's server, but i beg to differ... on the grounds that the ip given is actually dynamically assigned by them & it's also shown in RIPE whois database as part of a block allocated by vodafone not eircom...

pls can anyone shed any light on what settings i should be using? i've been trying this for 2.5 days now & getting nowhere....

usually this message means that whoever you are sending the email to, their domain is blocking smtp traffic from the IP address you have (vodafone) due to being on a spam list.
Depends on how you are sending email though as if you are sending it through eircoms smtp server then that is what the spamhaus server will see and block.

So what smtp server are you using, what ip address is the email saying its blocking and is it on a blacklist? try mxtoolbox.com

Saruman, thanks for your reply, in answer to your questions:

these are the smtp settings i've tried
mail1.eircom.net
smtp.vodafone.ie/net
mail.vodafone.ie/net

the ip address shows up in the message as being on the spamhaus pbl (policy block list) & when i checked the RIPE whois database that ip range is shown as allocated to vodafone

i checked the ip in mxtoolbox & it's on the spamhaus list as 127.0.0.11

i've spent 3 days searching the internet for an answer & 2 hours on the phone to vodafone without success....

someone else in ireland must be using the same setup as me i.e. an eircom email addy in outlook '03, using vodafone mobile internet broadband usb stick....??????

please help.... if you can.....

a very :confused::confused::confused:

Your outgoing mail server setting should be that of your isp, in this case vodafone, your incoming will be eircom. If you are getting a Spamhaus bounce message with a vodafone ip address listed, this means vodafone need to get the ip unlisted from spamhaus. You can do a look up of the ip address here: http://www.spamhaus.org/lookup.lasso

yes i agree my outgoing mail server should be my isp (vodafone) + incoming eircom & i've tried all the usual vodafone one's... none of which are working for me.....

yes i'm getting a spamhaus bounce message with the ip from vodafone listed, as per my post above

yes i've done a lookup & yes it's allocated to/by vodafone....

anyone have any ideas on how to get vodafone to de-list it?

thanks in advance of any help.... slowly loosing my mind over this....

You can try and set your outgoing mail server to eircom.net

But then you'll have to set "outgoing server requires authentication" and provide you login name and password for your eircom account.

moving to comp/tech as not really a Broadband issue

your best bet is use something like gmail.com#s outgoing mail server for your eircom.net address as it can be auth'ed seperately and will work on any connection uinlike eircoms outgoing server

What Cabaal said! In fact, just use Gmail if you can. If there is a forward option in eircom.net then you can forward your mail to it and eventually get rid of the eircom.net email address if you like.
Or you can configure gmail to retrieve your eircom.net email directly.

after another long phone call to vodavone, passed thro' various different ppl & depts. I eventually managed to speak to someone very helpful in the data support team who managed to get it working for me... not sure exactly how or what he did their end but as I was checking the settings with him it miraculusly worked & has been ever since....

big thumbs up (eventually) to vodafone data support
