    Hi All,

After the last few months of bad weather, and after having some near misses myself last week and this week, im seriously considering dumping the 18's and summer tyres for smaller wheels and either winter or all weather tires, from november to april.

Has anyone done the same thing, looking for advise and recommendations i.e. wheels to go for, tires.. I do 33,600km per year.

    Ta in advance.

If you really are going for a second set of tyres, then proper winter tyres is the way to go.

Most all weather tyres are just a compromise (often a bad one) and don't really work well in any sorts of conditions.

Do some research first and trawl the internet for tyre tests. Not everything that calls itself winter tyre is actually any good on snow and ice.

I guess if you're not in a hurry and give enough notice your local tyre place should be able to order your desired winter tyres ...else there is always the internet

I agree about avoiding the compromised all weather tyres. Get a proper set of winters. Lots of people think winters only are for snow/icy conditions, but they provide higher grip levels than summer tyres at all temperatures below 7C so in ireland, can be used almost all year round unfortunately!!:p

Agreed - if you have two sets, go with full winters.
Bridgestone Blizzaks or any Nokians are very good.

Cheers folks, what about the mileage im doing do they wear down faster. I am leaning towards 225/55 R 16 99 Q XL.

I use Vredestein for my summer tires, and found them very reasonable price wise. Would the Snowtrac 3 be a bit OTT for Ireland.

I noticed that a lot only come in 13's thats going to be too small for my car.. damn.

on eiretyres (basically a German site) you should find winter tyres in all sizes, not just 13's

Looking at about a 508 Euro for a full set of Wintrac xtreme 225/55 R16 95H..

Not bad.. need a set of alloys/steel wheels now.. anyone selling a set of 16s for the Golf V platform...
