Heya guys, I'm not sure whether to post this here or in the UCC thread but mods, feel free to move it :)

Right I'm doing Commerce and French in UCC in First Year and the only bit i hate is Accounting. My lecturer is a complete asshole who can't teach and I'm completely lost in the subject. Its supposed to be an introductory module but he teaches it like we've done it for the Leaving Cert (which I haven't)

Anyways basically I have an exam next week and I'm ****ting it :( Any useful links to explain the very basics of Accounting?? i.e Profit and Loss accounts, Balance sheets, adjustments and all that jazz... I would be very grateful for any help! I need it...

    Thanks in advance :D

You see that thing in the library with the white edges- it's called a book.

You need to sit down with it and read- this is called study.

You have a week. Loads of time.

Hah you're hilarious you... Your wit is just too sharp, I feel like such an idiot now....

I'd appreciate helpful posts, not smartass ones like yours.

    I'm not being smart mate-

    Lets compare and contrast.

Someone over the internet giving you grinds, firstly interpreation problems, then waiting for responses etc.

    Verses,

you sitting down and opening the book. If you have real problems find someone in your class to help youu. If you have specific queries we're all more than happy to help, but a GENERAL over view of Accountancy from basics,

Study, there is no shortcut here.

You're looking for someone to ride in on a magical unicorn and bail your ass out so you don't have to sit down and study. It is not going to happen.

You're blaming the lecture, blaming time, blaming everything around you but yourself.

Take some responsibility on board and study. If I sound condecending it's because I am and I make no apologies for it.

I was actually looking for some kind of website that would be of help

I agree with you there, im just asking for good sites/ introductory books that I can study

I've been studying for the last couple of weeks, my lecturer didn't say we needed a book but I find his notes completely confusing and unhelpful. Do you honestly think the first thing I would have done is post on Boards asking for help rather than studying? I'm not looking for a shortcut, I'm looking for basic information.
You're blaming the lecture, blaming time, blaming everything around you but yourself.

Sorry, do you know anything about me? You're trying to paint me as a lazy college student when I'm anything but. I can e-mail you my results in other subjects besides accounting and you'l see that I'm far from the idiot you want me to be.

Haha you're a lovely person aren't you?!

Stop trying to look for a fight, as you obviously are with that last comment

Okay- firstly there is not a college course in the country that does not have a course text.

Try looking up the lecturers intranet and it should have the course core textbook.

As you are not doing an accountancy degree I would guess it is along the lines of "Introduction to Accounting" or some such.

These books are monotonous and very very dull to study so the best way of doing them is doing the examples at the end of each chapter and past papers which once again should be available on the college intranet.

Don't know one personally. Nor would it be helpful. Lecturer-s even silly ones have their own patterns and questions they like to ask. Accountancy is pretty much going to be formatted by the past papers- for example question on might be a trial balance etc.
I've been studying for the last couple of weeks

I'm going to call shenanigans on this.

Firstly, College books have too much useless and irrelevant detail for 1st year accountancy.
Go into a book shop and buy the current leaving cert book (and teachers edition if you can get your hands on it for question solutions). And exam papers. Pick out a question do it, and use the leaving cert book to explain anything you don't understand. Leaving cert books are easier to understand and you will get to grips with the basics. Once you have the basics you will have no trouble in accountancy.

"Studying" (ie reading a book) accountancy is a waste of time. You have to just do questions regularly. Its easy if you do questions and practice. If you don't do lots of questions you will fail/struggle.

You can also get your course tutor to correct or go through stuff you don't understand. We had these in IT's.

If you practice questions regularly it'll be so easy. Reading a book is of no benefit.

    Hope this helps.

I am studying the professional accountancy exams (ACCA). There are some very good books on basic accounting written for these exams you should find them in most bookshops. The subject you are looking for is F3 Financial Accounting

    Good luck with the exam

Hi I was in a similar situation to you I was doing IATI and the teacher we had was teaching us like we knew everything already. I went out and bought a second hand leaving cert accounting book which really helped as it was summarised at the end of each chapter. As for sites I havent actually come across any that would explain things in Leymans(?) terms.
