how big a price difference do you need before you realise we are being ripped off?

And yet their prices are still cheaper than UPC ..

    http://www.upc.ie/television

UPC 33.50 for all non-movie channels,
    Sky 30.50

    UPC 30 extra for movies
    SKY 27-28 extra for movies.

SO who exactly is ripping us off ?

Its not really that much of a rip-off

£46 is 50e as a straight exchange rate swap
However you have to take into account that wages in Ireland are higher...for example min wage in Ireland is higher then UK, also comreg licensing etc

Its not that much of a difference

    Sterling price £46 = €50
    Irish Price €69.50
    Difference €19.50 a month €234 a year.
That is a huge difference. There is no wages difference as the signal is from a satelite. Their call centre is in scotland and the people that install the dishes are sole traders. So what irish staff do they have. This is why I say it is a rip off.

in fairness to sky the price was nearly equal when sterling was strong.
as a matter of interest if a pound was equal to 50 cents would you be looking for sky to increase their prices to €92

So the sole traders are from the UK are they?
There is a difference if they are Irish as they are being paid differently...most likely more

Have to agree with the OP - this is a price differential of 30%+.
When are people here going to wake up & smell the roses - for anyone to try & defend a 30%+ price differential from a huge global entity like Sky smacks dis-belief. Wake up Sky is in effect run from the UK with "cheap" UK labour supply.
Look at other threads in Boards whereby Sky customers have extracted huge reductions in their monthly charges (up to 50%) by threatening to leave Sky..Sky don't mention the high cost of Irish labour or offer any other lame excuses, No, they are quite happy to offer this huge reduction - why, because they are still making a fortune from us Paddies(even at circa 50% off).

I paid for the installation of the dish - once it wasdone the installers were no longer needed by me. At what point do they become relevant to the payment process of a monthly bill, why would higher cost of installation (which I have already paid for) affect the monthly price of Sky?

It should not, and does not. Sky are just charging 20% to 30% more because they can, not because they need to in order to cover extra costs of supplying to Ireland.

People, Do we expect companies to be constently updating their prices to reflect changes in currency exchange rates? Untill the UK starts using the Euro we cannot compare like for like. If you don't like the price don't use the service. If the Exchange rate went the other way and £46 was now €80 would people be asking Sky to adjust the price to reflect this change. Companies will always charge what the market can bare.

Yes because if it was the Euro that was getting stronger you can be damn sure that Sky would raise their prices.

The person that mentions the sole traders, they are paid the same as in the UK, so that is why I am saying they have no extra costs in Ireland, yet they charge more.

So you can honestly say with 100% accuracy that if a sole trader is paid say £100 to do a sky install in England he's also paid 100e in Ireland and that shops who resell sky get exactly the same commission in Ireland and the UK.? I'd be interested to see proof of this.

Also your comments about the euro getting stronger are humorous, so say the euro gets stronger every week for several weeks you'd expect sky to increase prices every week as the euro gets stronger and the same if it gets weaker....you need to be realistic and its clear you've never been involved in running a business.

True but now that the pound is nearly at parity with Euro Sky should lower their prices accordingly. What's the problem here, why is everyone on this guys back. He's only pointing out that we are getting shafted and he has everyone on his case about it. Do you all like being ripped off?

You could be pretty sure we would not get the chance to ask as the price would have gone up immediately.

Don't think anyone thinks you should increase/decrease your prices every week but when things change drastically you should or else go out of business.

If you want a reduction in your rip off Sky prices:
    1. Ring Sky
    2. Tell them you cannot afford to pay the current charges for the package they are offering and you are switching to a cheaper offer ex UPC.
    3. Wait for offer of discount.
    4. Bingo

Really? thats maybe because of the size of their population i know they have a Billion people more or less and if only 100 million were recieveing sky the would still make a profit compared to us.
I dont know what the stats are on people who have sky in Ireland and if you take into account Chorus, NTL and the like its no wonder its so high there in it for the profit.
